A Celebration of Life for Etta Borden will be held on Saturday, April 21, 2012 from 2:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. in the Basement Fellowship Hall of the First United Methodist Church in Holdrege, Nebraska. A short program will be held at 3:00 p.m. with time for family and friends to share their memories of Etta.
Etta Borden, 84 years of age, of Lincoln, Nebraska (formerly of Holdrege) passed away on Monday, January 16, 2012 at the Suncoast Woodside Hospice House in Pinellas Park, Florida. Etta was born on November 7, 1927, the youngest of five children born to Herbert Taylor and Clara Bell (Eddleman) Hobbs at Waldron, Missouri. When Etta was very young, her parents passed away and she was then raised by Leslie E. and Alice R. Allmand, as their own daughter. She graduated from Holdrege Senior High School with the Class of 1945.
On October 27, 1946, she married Melvin Robert Borden, in Holdrege. They were blessed with four children: Susan, Robert, Don and Jamie.
Etta was the Office Manager at the Ford Garage in Holdrege for over 32 years. She enjoyed her time working with Charles H. Gabus and Donald R. Loar. After her retirement, Etta moved to Arizona for about 10 years to be close to her sons, and then she moved to Lincoln to be closer to her daughter.
Etta loved being a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed reading, listening to music and Scotty dogs. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Holdrege for 57 years.
Etta was loved by many. She will always be remembered for her warm personality and contagious smile.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Herbert and Clara Bell Hobbs; her other parents, Les and Rachel Allmand; her husband, Melvin; one son, Robert; sisters: Mary Hobbs Coffman and Martha Hobbs Van Kirk; and brothers: Homer Hobbs and Clifford Hobbs.
Survivors include her three children: Susan Strong of Lincoln; Don Borden and his wife, DeAnn of Florida; Jamie Borden of Chandler, Arizona; four grandchildren: Heidi (Strong) Stodola and husband, Marc of Elkhorn, Nebraska; Celeste (Borden) Daggy and husband, Micah of Florida; Michael Borden of Colorado; and Robbie Borden of Chandler, Arizona; four great-grandchildren: Dylan Nielsen, Courtney, Ally, and Brady Stodola all of Elkhorn; sister, Barbara Allmand of Overland Park, Kansas; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
The family has honored her wish for cremation.
