Evelyn Ellen Nelson, 94 years of age, of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, (formerly of Holdrege, Nebraska) passed away on Wednesday, December 23, 2009 at the Golden Living Nursing Home in Scottsbluff. Evelyn was born November 8, 1915 at Upland, Nebraska, the daughter of Samuel and Katie (Johnston) Murphy. At 11 months of age, she and her sister, Marie and brother, Elmer were placed in the Christian Children's Home in Phelps County, Nebraska. She resided there until she was 16 years of age. Evelyn then moved in with her sister.

In June 1938, Evelyn was united in marriage to Delmar Nelson and the couple had three children: Delmar Jr., Douglas and Patricia. They engaged in farming northeast of Holdrege until Delmar retired from farming in 1966. At this time the couple bought the Loomis Café in Loomis, Nebraska. As a great cook and people person, Evelyn was in her element. After Delmar's passing, Evelyn traveled and enjoyed living in various places.

She moved back to Holdrege and was active at the Senior Center for a number of years. Evelyn then moved to Kearney, Nebraska, with her son, Douglas until the year 2000. She then made her home in Scottsbluff to be near her daughter.

She leaves to mourn her passing her son, Delmar Nelson Jr. and his wife, Barbara of Kearney; daughter, Patricia Seiffert and her husband, Garth of Scottsbluff; 10 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and niece, Mae Lofton and her husband, Harley of Holdrege. Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Douglas; grandson, Dana; sister, Marie Holmes; and brother, Elmer Murphy.

Visitation will be held at the Holcomb Evangelical Free Church, north of Holdrege on Monday, December 28, 2009 from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting friends from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
