Evelyn Violet Russell, 98 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Friday, September 4, 2020, at the Phelps Memorial Health Center at Holdrege. She was born on February 5, 1922, on the family farm in Harlan County, Nebraska, the eighth of nine children born to William Oscar and Allie Elva (White) Sell. She received her education from Long Island Public Schools in Long Island, Kansas, and graduated with the class of 1938.
Evelyn was united in marriage to the love of her life, James Russell on July 16, 1939 and the couple made their home on a farm in Harlan County for 10 years, until moving to Omaha, Nebraska. After James had completed his education, the couple moved to Lincoln, where Evelyn attended 2 years of college at the University of Lincoln. She was employed by Back to the Bible for 30 years, where she worked as the secretary and did accounting.
The couple traveled to many countries to visit missionaries in Europe, Africa, Israel, and South America. Upon retirement in 1986, the couple moved to Holdrege. They spent their free time traveling overseas with missionary work, and traveling to Texas in the winters. While in Texas, Evelyn and Jim helped establish and attended the Evangelical Free Church in McAllen, Texas. In 2012, she was preceded in death by Jim and she began to make her home at the Christian Homes Care Community in Holdrege.
Evelyn was a faithful member of the Trinity Evangelical Free Church in Holdrege; helped with the White Cross, up until her death; and in recent years, attended the Christian Homes Chapel. She enjoyed sewing, crafting, making quilts, and was skilled in both painting and ceramics.
Besides her husband and parents; Evelyn was preceded in death by three brothers: a brother in infancy; John Sell; and Oliver "Stub" Sell and his wife, Doris; four sisters: Elizabeth Russell; Laura Daily; Iva Shaver; and Elva Bushnell; two brothers-in-law: Arthur Russell and his wife, Agnes; and Jerold Russell and his wife, Estalene; three sisters-in-law: Della Sell; Elsie Randell and her husband, Leonard; and Evelyn Bemis and her husband, Bob.
Evelyn leaves to celebrate her life; her beloved brother, Bill Sell of Holdrege; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, all over the world.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 8, 2020 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege.
