Florence E Skallberg

Memorial Services for Florence E. Skallberg will be conducted from the Bethel Lutheran Church in Holdrege, Nebraska on Monday, October 12, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend David Sites and Darrel Wissmann, PMA, officiating. Private family interment will be in the Prairie Home Cemetery at Holdrege prior to the Memorial Service.

Florence Elizabeth Caroline (Swanson) Skallberg, 74 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Wednesday, October 7, 2009 as a result of an automobile accident south of Elm Creek, Nebraska. Florence was born January 18, 1935 on the family farm two miles north of Bertrand, Nebraska, the fourth child of Theodore C. and Minnie Cornelia (Malm) Swanson. She was baptized and confirmed at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Bertrand. She attended District #69 for six years and then transferred to the Bertrand Public Schools, where Florence graduated from Bertrand High School with the class of 1952. She then pursued higher education at the Luther College in Wahoo, Nebraska, graduating in 1954. After graduation, Florence was the secretary and bookkeeper for an accounting firm in Holdrege, where she was employed for six years.

She became a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church in Holdrege, where Florence was active in the women's groups, the serving groups, and the quilting work unit.

On June 24, 1957 she was united in marriage to Donald W. Skallberg from Holdrege. To this union two children were born: John W. and Jean E. After her children began school, Florence became the secretary at Bethel Lutheran Church and continued in this position for twenty-two years.

Florence loved being a homemaker, and enjoyed being able to be at home for her children. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, traveling and loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Don and Florence enjoyed taking each grandchild on a cruise when they reached the age of ten. She finished taking the youngest grandchild, Jody on her cruise after Don's passing.

Besides her parents, and husband, Donald on May 2, 2004, Florence was preceded in death by two sisters: Dorothy Lewis and Ruth Arden; and one brother, Reuben Swanson and his wife, Darlene.

She leaves to mourn her passing, her son, John Skallberg and his wife, Wendy of Holdrege; daughter, Jean Reynoso of Grand Junction, Colorado; six grandchildren, her son's children, Jason and Jody; and her daughter's children, Nathan, Lauren, Anna and Megan; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 11, 2009 from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege with the family greeting from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

A memorial has been established in her memory and will be designated at a later date.
