Gayle E. Hewitt, 84 years of age, of Salem, Oregon, passed away on Tuesday, May 26, 2009 in Silverton, Oregon. Memorial Services will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church in Salem with Graveside Services being held on Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at the Highland Cemetery at Bertrand, Nebraska with Pastor Roy Rasmussen, officiating.
Gayle Eugene Hewitt was born on a farm near Osceola, Nebraska on December 24, 1924, to Frank and Cora (Heckman) Hewitt. He attended his first eight years of school in rural Polk County, Nebraska and attended high school in Osceola, Nebraska. On May 31, 1944, during World War II, he joined the Navy and served in the Pacific theater on a Landing Ship Tank (LST) until honorably discharged on June 17, 1946. He enrolled at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln that fall, graduating in 1950 with a degree in Accounting.
On September 14, 1968 Gayle was united in marriage to Mary Lou Pierce at Bertrand. His profession as a corporate tax accountant took them to corporate headquarters in many cities. They lived in Lincoln, Denver, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. He retired in 1987, moving to Salem, Oregon, where he resided until his passing.
Gayle loved traveling and planning trips. He and Mary Lou traveled throughout the United States, Europe, The British Isles, Scandinavia, Canada, Nova Scotia and New Zealand.
Besides his parents, Gayle was preceded in death by two brothers: George Hewitt and Harold Hewitt, and his nephew, Monte Wilkinson.
Gayle is survived by his wife, Mary Lou Hewitt of Salem: two sisters: Evelyn Van Cleef of Nampa, Idaho and Jean Wilkinson and her husband, Duane of Greeley, Colorado; sister-in-law, Jean (Pierce) High of Kearney, Nebraska, and several nieces and nephews.
