Funeral Services for Gaylerd J. Mattson will be conducted from the Moses Hill Evangelical Covenant Church in Phelps County, Nebraska on Saturday, February 24, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Craig Roberts, officiating. Interment will be in the Moses Hill Cemetery.

Gaylerd Julius Mattson, 95 years of age, of Kearney, Nebraska (formerly of Holdrege) passed away on Tuesday, February 20, 2007 at the Mt. Carmel Home in Kearney. Gaylerd was born December 12, 1911 on the family farm north of Holdrege, the youngest of ten children of Solomon and Sarah (Anderson) Mattson.
He received his education at the Snowball District #66 School north of Holdrege in Phelps County.

On December 19, 1934 he was united in marriage to Alma Schleeter. They made their home on the Mattson farm in the Westmark Township of Phelps County, where he engaged in farming and produced livestock. Gaylerd was also known for his custom shelling and thrashing for the area community.

The couple served as the Swedish Days King and Queen in 1980-81. Gaylerd and Alma celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary in 1994. On May 17, 1997 he was preceded in death by his wife, Alma. Gaylerd then moved into Holdrege, where he resided until October of 2002 when he made his home at the Mt. Carmel Home in Kearney.

Gaylerd was a lifelong member of the Moses Hill Evangelical Covenant Church, where he was baptized and confirmed and was active in many capacities. He also loved woodworking as a hobby and enjoyed traveling with his wife, Alma.

He leaves to mourn his passing one sister-in-law, Mary Mattson of Kearney, Nebraska and a host of nieces and nephews. Besides his wife, Alma, he was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers: Arthur, Sanders, Jobert, Justice, Otto and Oscar and three sisters: Lille (Freburg) Larson, Anna Freburg and Ada Ek.

Mr. Mattson will lie in state at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege on Friday, February 23, 2007 from 1:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

A memorial has been established in his memory to the Moses Hill Church or to the donor's choice.
