A Funeral Service for Gaylon L. Rome will be held on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at the Bauer-Torrey & Mach Funeral Home in Alma, Nebraska, with Pastor Tom Walker officiating.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, January 14, 2025 at 2:30 p.m, at the Wildhorse Cemetery, Bogue, Kansas, with Military Honors.


Gaylon LeRoy Rome, 81 years of age, of Alma, passed away on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at Harlan County Health System in Alma. Gaylon was born November 10, 1943, in Bogue, Kansas, the second of four children born to Andrew Richard and Olive Evelyn (Desbien) Rome.

He received his primary education from Bogue Public Schools and graduated from Bogue High School with the class of 1961.  Gaylon pursued higher education from Brown Maake Business College and received an Accounting Degree.

On March 15, 1964, Gaylon enlisted into the United States Army and worked as a Sr. Switchboard Operator.  He was a decorated sharpshooter and was honorably discharged in 1966.


On June 29, 1964, Gaylon was united in marriage to Annette "Suzie" Hooper at the Catholic church in Damar, Kansas.  The couple made their home in Alma, and were blessed with three children: Scott, Machelle, and Jamey.

In June 2006, Gaylon was united in marriage to Sondra Smith in Alma.

Gaylon owned and operated Zeller-Zulauf Furniture Store.  Together the family enjoyed summer vacations, boating and water skiing, golfing, and camping at Harlan County Lake.

Gaylon enjoyed golfing and coffeeing with his friends downtown.  He attended St. Jospeh Catholic Church.


He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Garold LeRoy "Gary" Rome in 2004; and both of his wives, Suzie and Sondra.

Survivors include his children: Scott Rome of Bogue, Kansas; Machelle Sholtz and her husband, Scott of Hampton, Nebraska; and Jamey Rome and his wife, Tessa of Gibbon, Nebraska; step-daughters:  Serena Wallace and husband, Brad of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and Sondra Money and her husband, Jack of Edmond, Oklahoma;13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; his brother, Rick Rome and his wife, Nancy of Dallas, Texas; his sister, Karen Ginther and her husband, Gary of Goodland, Kansas; a sister-in-law, Deanna Rome of Herrimin, Utah;  along with nieces, nephews, other relatives; and many dear friends.


A Visitation will be held on Monday, January 13, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Bauer-Torrey & Mach Funeral Home in Alma.

Memorials in Gaylon's honor can be directed to the family for future designation.
