Funeral Services for George W. Schmidt will be conducted from the Saint John Lutheran Church in Stuttgart, Arkansas on Thursday, April 19, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Jack Gillam, officiating. Interment will be in the Lone Tree Cemetery at Stuttgart.
George W. Schmidt, 92 years of age, of Holdrege, Nebraska (formerly of Stuttgart, Arkansas) entered God's Grace on Saturday, April 14, 2007 at the Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege. George was born July 17, 1914 at Stuttgart, Arkansas, the son of George H. and Emilie (Leder) Schmidt. George received his education from Stuttgart High School with the class of 1934. He then pursued higher education at the Draughan's Business School in Little Rock, Arkansas and although his profession was bookkeeping and accounting, he was a locomotive Fireman for the Missouri Pacific Railroad during WW II. His love for trains was life long and he was a longtime member of the Arkansas Railroad Club and the Cotton Belt Rail Historical Society.
On April 17, 1938 he was united in marriage to Alice Pauline "Polly" Green and to this union two children were born: George W. and Margaret. George moved his family to Houston, Texas in 1951. He later moved to Denver, Colorado, where he lived until his retirement. He and his wife, Polly returned to Stuttgart in 1983. Following Polly's death in 1995, George moved to Holdrege and lived with his daughter until his death.
He leaves to mourn his passing his son, George William Schmidt and his wife, Evelyn of Virginia Beach, Virginia; daughter, Margaret (Schmidt) Dewey of Holdrege; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Besides his wife, Polly he was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters and two brothers.
Mr. Schmidt will lie in state at the Turpin Funeral Home in Stuttgart, Arkansas on Wednesday, April 18, 2007 from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
A memorial has been established in his memory and suggested to the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Holdrege, Nebraska or the Saint John Lutheran Church in Stuttgart.
