Mass of Christian Burial for Gerald J. Weber will be conducted from the All Saints Catholic Church in Holdrege, Nebraska on Monday, March 11, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. with Father Thomas Lux, officiating. Interment will be held in the Prairie Home Cemetery at Holdrege, with military honors conducted by the Martin-Horn American Legion Post #66 of Holdrege in conjunction with the U.S. Navy Honors Team.
Gerald Joseph "Jerry" Weber, 94 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Tuesday, March 5, 2019 at the CHI Health - Good Samaritan in Kearney, Nebraska. Jerry was born August 15, 1924 in Roseland, Nebraska, the eldest son of three children born to Henry A. and Matilda L. (Weber) Weber. He attended Holstein grade school and graduated from Holstein High School with the class of 1942. Jerry then attended Chillicothe Business College in Chillicothe, Missouri.
In May of 1943, he was inducted into the United States Navy, where he served aboard a troop ship in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. After being honorably discharged from the Navy in April of 1946, Jerry spent 16 years in the Electric Department with the City of Hastings, Nebraska utilities. On September 30, 1946, he was united in marriage to Gladys "Volon" Blocker at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Roseland, Nebraska. To this union three daughters were born: Nancy, Linda, and Carol. The family made their home in Hastings, until moving to Holdrege in 1962. In 1962, he formed a partnership with Leonard Streff, and they opened a NAPA auto parts store in Holdrege known as S & W Auto Parts. In 1989, Jerry retired and sold his interest in the business. On April 18, 2009, he was preceded in death by his wife, Volon.
Jerry was a member of the All Saints Catholic Church, where he served as a church trustee and on the parish council for several years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Elks Lodge, and the Holdrege Chamber of Commerce. He volunteered for ten years on the Board of Directors for the First Security Bank of Holdrege and spent six years on the Holdrege City Council. Jerry joined the Holdrege Rotary Club in 1974 and was club president from 1982 – 1983. He and his wife, Volon, were both honored by Rotary as Paul Harris Fellows for their dedication to the Rotary Foundation. Jerry was also a member of the Martin-Horn American Legion Post #66 and past member of the Holdrege Country Club.
After their retirement in 1989, Jerry and Volon enjoyed spending winters in Mesa, Arizona. He loved to golf and was an avid Nebraska Cornhusker Football fan, attending both home and away games when possible.
Besides his parents and wife, Volon; Jerry was preceded in death by; a granddaughter, Mattie Mattson; son-in-law, Michael Marshall; and brother-in-law, Grant Fox.
He leaves to celebrate his life; three daughters: Nancy Fritsche and her husband, Blaine of Holdrege; Linda Mattson of Funk, Nebraska; and Carol Marshall of Lincoln, Nebraska; six grandchildren: Angie Envick; Ryan Fritsche and his wife, Allison; Deanna Mazour and her husband, Chandler; Erica Vannier and her husband, Darby; Luke Mattson and his wife, Patty; and Jennica Seyler and her husband, Darick; fourteen great grandchildren: Austin, Amanda, Madylin, Morgan, Alexis, Abbie, Natalie, Brett, Trevor, Bianca, Christian, Blake, Halley, and Brystal; one brother, Gene Weber and his wife, JoAnne of Hastings; sister, Alice Fox of Turlock, California; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 10, 2019 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. with family greeting from 1:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege. Rosary and Wake Service will be held at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege on Sunday, March 10, 2019 at 3:00 p.m.
A memorial has been established in Jerry's honor, and kindly suggested to the All Saints Catholic Church of Holdrege or the Phelps County Community Foundation.
