Memorial Services for Gladys P. Meeker will be conducted from the Bethel Lutheran Church in Holdrege, Nebraska on Thursday, January 29, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. with Darrel Wissmann, PMA officiating. Private family inurnment will be held prior to the memorial service at the Prairie Home Cemetery at Holdrege.
Gladys Pauline Meeker, 86 years of age, of North Platte, Nebraska (formerly of Holdrege) passed away on Sunday, January 25, 2009 at the Premier Estates Assisted Living in North Platte. Gladys was born January 14, 1923 on the family farm north of Bertrand in Phelps County, Nebraska, the fourth of five children of Elmer and Ella (Swanson) Johnson. She received her primary education in rural Phelps County and then graduated from Bertrand High School with the class of 1940.
On August 27, 1944 she was united in marriage to Raymond B. Meeker at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Bertrand. To this union three children were born: Paula, Carol and James. With Raymond's employment at Burlington Northern Railroad the couple made their home in several towns prior to settling in Maywood, Nebraska. Following Raymond's retirement in 1978 they relocated to Holdrege. Gladys was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond on June 15, 1979. While in Holdrege, Gladys worked at Phelps Memorial Health Center from 1979 until her retirement in 1994. In 2006 she moved to North Platte to be near her family.
Gladys was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church in Holdrege. She enjoyed many friendship bonds that were formed through the years in several organizations and volunteer work.
She leaves to mourn her passing her two daughters: Paula Meeker of Omaha, Nebraska and Carol Allen and her husband, Larry of North Platte; one son, James Meeker and his wife, Rosie of Sterling, Colorado; seven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; one brother, Verdon Johnson of Bertrand; brother-in-law, Richard Peterson of Holdrege; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Eugene Johnson; two sisters: Elaine Kremlacek and her husband, Raymond and Wilma Peterson.
There will be no visitation, the family is honoring Gladys' wish for cremation.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Callahan Cancer Center or Great Plains Home Health and Hospice in North Platte.
