Funeral Services for Gladys E. Poppert will be conducted from the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege, Nebraska on Saturday, February 3, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Wendell Davis, officiating. Interment will be in the Prairie Home Cemetery at Holdrege.
Gladys E. Poppert, 97 years of age, of Leonardville, Kansas (formerly of Holdrege) departed this life on Tuesday, January 30, 2007 at the Leonardville Nursing Home. Gladys was born November 25, 1909 on the family farm northwest of Oxford in Furnas County, Nebraska, the eldest of two children of Lester and Maude (Hodge) Eliker. Her girlhood days were spent in Oxford. As a young girl, she was baptized in the Baptist Church. Gladys received her education at Oxford, graduating from Oxford High School with the class of 1929. Following her education, she was united in marriage to Russell Poppert of Stamford, Nebraska on March 5, 1930. The couple made their home for the next 14 years on a farm in Harlan County. During this time, three children were born to this union: Glenn, Beth and Donna. In 1944 they moved to a farm north of Holdrege, where they resided until Russell's passing in 1968. Gladys then moved into Holdrege and remained active working as a nursing assistant at Methodist Memorial Homes for 14 years, retiring at 72 years of age. Gladys later made her home at Methodist Homes for six years prior to relocating to the Leonardville Kansas Nursing Home to be near her daughter, Donna, where she resided until her death.
Gladys was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Holdrege, where she was active with the Women's Church Group and bible study. As a pastime, she enjoyed crocheting and loved to dance. She was a loving and devoted mother and will be greatly missed by all.
She leaves to mourn her departure her son, Glenn Poppert and his wife, Bonnie of Holdrege; two daughters: Beth Asche and her husband, Wes of Omaha, Nebraska and Donna Lindgren and her husband, Keith of Manhattan, Kansas; eight grandchildren: Glenn Lee Poppert, Todd Poppert, Dee Ann Hale, David Asche, Cindy Wilkens, Dwayne Asche, Kevin Lindgren and Kathi Teeter; sixteen great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Frank "Jiggs" Eliker and an infant grandson, Timothy.
There will be no public visitation, the casket will be closed.
