Graveside Memorial Services for Gweneveir C. "Gwen" Hammond will be conducted on Wednesday, July 22, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the Stamford Cemetery at Stamford, Nebraska with the Reverend Thalia Woodworth, officiating.
Gweneveir Cora "Gwen" Hammond, 87 years of age, of Beaverton, Oregon, passed away on Friday, March 27, 2009 in Beaverton, after a brief illness. Gwen was born on March 20, 1922 in Albion, Nebraska, the eldest child of John and Clara Oatman. She grew up in train stations managed by her father. She graduated from the University of Nebraska, where she met her husband, Darrell E. Hammond, a high school music teacher. The couple wed in 1943, weeks before Mr. Hammond deployed with the U.S. Army to fight in Germany during World War II. After the war, the couple settled in Nebraska until moving to Oregon in 1959 with their three sons: Paul, John and Bruce.
Gwen was a longtime math teacher at Western View Middle School in the Corvallis, Oregon School District from 1967 until she retired in 1984. She also taught piano, Sunday school, served as a Cub Scout den mother and was an active member of the Corvallis United Methodist Church and the teachers' organization Delta Kappa Gamma. In December of 1976, she was preceded in death by her husband, Darrell.
She is survived by her three sons: Paul of Philomath, John of Warrenton and Bruce of Hillsboro; two brothers, Keith Oatman of South Sioux City, Nebraska, and Lynn Oatman of Elkton, Maryland; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents and her husband, Darrell, she was preceded in death by one brother.
There will be no visitation.
A memorial has been established and kindly suggested to the American Heart Association.
