Funeral Services for Harlan H. Lilyhorn, Jr. will be conducted from the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege, Nebraska on Tuesday, July 5, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. with Reverend Connie Karr, officiating. Burial will be held at the Highland Cemetery at Bertrand, Nebraska with military honors provided by the Bertrand Veteran's Organization and the U.S. Army National Guard Military Honors Team.
Henry "Harlan" Lilyhorn, Jr., 86 years of age, of Bertrand, passed away on Tuesday, June 28, 2011 at the Holdrege Memorial Homes. Harlan was born June 14, 1925 in Phelps County, east of Bertrand, the eldest of four sons born to Henry Harlan and Mary M. (Smith) Lilyhorn. He received his primary education from District #21 rural school and graduated from Bertrand High School with the class of 1943.
On October 25, 1944 he was inducted into the U.S. Army and served his country during WWII until his honorable discharge on November 25, 1946.
On April 3, 1947 he was united in marriage to Mary Louise Turner at the Westmark Evangelical Free Church north of Loomis, Nebraska. To this union five children were born: Rogene, Dale, Joanne, Wendell and Joyce. The family made their home near Bertrand, where Harlan engaged in farming and enjoyed the labor of the land.
Harlan was a member of the United Methodist Church and the V.F.W. both of Bertrand. He enjoyed building, collecting and displaying windmills on the west edge of Bertrand. Most of all, he loved to spend time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Joyce Lilyhorn in 1998; and one brother, Jack Lilyhorn; and sister-in-law, Verna Swanson.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary Louise; four children: Rogene Daharsh and her husband, Bill of Merritt Island, Florida, Dale Lilyhorn and his wife, Janice of Raymond, Nebraska, Joanne Marsh of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Wendell Lilyhorn and his wife, Barbara of Hutchinson, Kansas; 8 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers: Jay Lilyhorn and his wife, Joy of Holdrege, and Douglas Lilyhorn and his wife, Joan of Bertrand; sisters-in-law: Hazel Lilyhorn of Crete, Nebraska, Norma Hock and her husband, Bob of Holdrege; brother-in-law, Don Swanson of Holdrege; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held on Monday, July 4, 2011 at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege, from 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m., with the family greeting friends from 1:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
A memorial has been established in Harlan's memory and will be designated at a later date.
