Celebration of Life Services for Harmon S. Barnes will be held on Saturday, August 16, 2014 at
11:00 a.m. at the Christian Homes Care Community Chapel in Holdrege, Nebraska with Pastor Jeff Kimberly officiating. Private family inurnment will be held at the Wilcox Cemetery at Wilcox, Nebraska prior to the services.
Harmon Semer Barnes, 76 years of age, of Wilcox, passed away on Monday, August 4, 2014 at the Christian Homes Care Community in Holdrege. Harmon was born September 15, 1937 at Franklin, Nebraska, the youngest of eight children born to Semer L. and Lucy P. (Smith) Barnes. Harmon received his education from Alma Public Schools. Following his education, he was inducted into the United States Army. In the years to come, Harmon also served for several years in the Nebraska Army National Guards.
On October 4, 1958 he was united in marriage to Jule E. Rogers at First Presbyterian Church in Holdrege. The couple were blessed with five children: Venus, ParisLee, Darin, Brittany and Preston. The family made their home in Wilcox. During his lifetime Harmon was employed by Christian Homes in the Maintenance Department, Palmer Brothers Granite Company, KK Appliance, Montgomery Wards and McClymont's Elevator.
Harmon enjoyed fishing and hunting in his younger years with his brothers and was a member of the Holdrege Jaycee's for several years. He enjoyed attending family reunions and most of all loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters: Grace Barnes in infancy, Geneivie Kimberly, and Christina Klien; and two brothers: Wilbur Barnes in infancy and Ernest Barnes. Harmon leaves to mourn his passing; his wife of almost 56 years, Jule Barnes of Wilcox; his five children: Venus Shriver and her husband, Bob, Paris James, Darin Barnes and his wife, Barb, Brittany Kujawski and her husband, David, all of Wilcox; and Preston Barnes of Omaha; six grandchildren: Sarah Bertrand and her husband, Brent, Thomas Barnes, Savanna James, Brandon Barnes, Beth Barnes, and Melissa Ortega; three great-grandchildren: Emmett Bertrand, Luka Kujawski and Jacel Johnson; two brothers: Howard Barnes and Wilford Barnes both of Holdrege; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
There will be no visitation, the family is honoring Harmon's wish for cremation.
A memorial has been established in Harmon's honor and will be designated at a later date.
