Mass of Christian Burial Service for Harold L. Meyers will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at the All Saints Catholic Church in Holdrege, Nebraska with Father Thomas Lux and Father Brian Kane, officiating. Rosary will be held prior to the services at 9:00 a.m. at the church. Interment will be held in the Prairie Home Cemetery at Holdrege following the services.
Harold Lawrence Meyers, 81 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at the Christian Homes Care Community following a courageous battle with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS.) Harold was born on June 4, 1933 on a farm near Plainville, Kansas, the third of four children to James William and Marie Elizabeth (Garvert) Meyers. He was baptized in the Sacred Heart Church and attended eight grades in the Sacred Heart School. Harold then graduated from Plainville Rural High School with the class of 1951. He then pursued higher education at Fort Hays State College in Hays, Kansas.
He began his career with Kansas Nebraska Natural Gas Co. in 1953 in Plainville. On April 26, 1954, he was united in marriage to Harriet A. Newell at Damar, Kansas and to this union four children were born: Richard, Douglas, Diane, and Randall. While in Plainville, Harold was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, was past Vice-President of the Junior Chamber of Commerce. He also served as President of the Lions Club, Vice-President of the Parent-Teachers Association of the Sacred Heart School, and past Secretary/Treasurer of the Plainville Rural Fire Department, in which he was a volunteer for 17 years.
In 1969, he was transferred by Kansas Nebraska to Holdrege, where Harold served as District Manager. He retired from the company after 38 years of service in 1991. While in Holdrege, he was an active member of the All Saints Catholic Church, serving as a past Trustee. Harold was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Holdrege Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis Club, Holdrege Planning Commission, Holdrege Country Club, and the Elks Lodge. He enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, traveling, woodworking, playing golf and working outdoors. Harold and Harriet also enjoyed wintering in Arizona for several years.
Harold leaves to mourn his passing; his wife of 60 years, Harriet of Holdrege; one daughter, Diane Ostgren and her husband, Dennis of Holdrege; three sons: Rick Meyers and his wife, Kim of Littleton, Colorado, Doug Meyers and his wife, Kathy of Minden, Nebraska, and Randy Meyers and his wife, Linda of Littleton, Colorado; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Delores Meyers of Plainville; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; great-grandson, James Ostgren; one sister, Mary Helen Meyers at 12 years of age, and two brothers: Ronald Meyers at nine months of age, and Joseph Meyers.
Visitation will be held on Friday, September 19, 2014 at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege from 1:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
A memorial has been established in Harold's honor and kindly suggested to the All Saints Catholic Church or the John Paul II Medical Research Institution for ALS.
