Funeral Services for Harold L. Rimpley will be held on Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at 2:30 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege, Nebraska, with Pastor Mary Fuller officiating. Burial will follow at the Highland Cemetery at Bertrand, Nebraska, with Military Honors provided by the Bertrand Veteran's Organization in conjunction with the United States Navy Military Honors Team.
Harold LeRoy Rimpley, 89 years of age, of Bertrand, passed away on Wednesday, October 29, 2014 at the Bertrand Nursing Home in Bertrand. He was born January 8, 1925 in Eddyville, Nebraska, the third of five children born to William R. and Ices Mary (Smith) Rimpley. He attended Lexington High School in Lexington, Nebraska until he was able to enlist into the United States Navy on January 5, 1943.
Harold served on the USS Oakland until he was honorably discharged in St. Louis, Missouri on January 26, 1946.
Following his return from the Navy, Harold worked for the mill in Lexington for a few months.
He was united in marriage to Vera M. Young of Lexington. The couple was blessed with two daughters, Shirley and Sharon. The family made their home in Lexington. In 1955 they purchased the Jack & Jill Grocery Store in Bertrand. They continued to operate the D & H Grocery Store until their retirement in 1992.
Harold enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, reading, especially westerns and history books and watching John Wayne movies. He especially enjoyed feeding the wildlife at his farm. The deer where fond of him and would nudge the screen door to get his attention.
Harold was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Bertrand, the American Legion and the VFW.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Vera in 1998; daughter, Sharon Phillippi; one granddaughter, Tammy LaVene; sisters: Reba Bessman and her husband, Ernest and Loretta Crawford; brother, Clayton Rimpley and his wife, Phyllis; sister-in-law, Lillie Wing and her husband, Harvey; and brothers-in-law: Leroy Dimick and his wife, June and Robert Sheldon.
Harold leaves to mourn his passing, his daughter, Shirley LaVene and her husband, Richard of rural Loomis, Nebraska; three grandchildren: Jim Phillippi and his wife, Rhonda of Smithfield, Nebraska, Valarie Morris of Lincoln, Nebraska and Randall LaVene and his wife, Melanie of Richmond, Missouri; brother, Gordon Rimpley and his wife, Joyce of Lexington; seven great-grandchildren: Karmen, Andy and Persephone Phillippi, Levi Morris, Ryley LaVene, Kristen Horine and Katie Potter and her husband, Brice; four great-great-grandchildren: Saige and Nate Horine and Landen and Liem Potter; sister-in-law, Lorene Sheldon of Centralia, Washington; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
Visitation will be held on Monday, November 3, 2014 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege with the family greeting friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
A memorial has been established in Harold's honor and will be designated at a later date.
