Graveside Memorial Services for Harriett E. Silvey will be held on Saturday, February 6, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at the Prairie Home Cemetery in Holdrege, Nebraska with Reverend Jeff Adams officiating.
Harriett Esther Silvey, 94 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Thursday, January 14, 2016 at Holdrege Memorial Homes. Harriett was born October 3, 1921 at Holdrege, the only child born to Harry Gilbert August and Esther Charlotte (Swanson) Logan. She received her education and graduated from Holdrege High School, with the class of 1939. She then pursued higher education at Hastings College, where she received her bachelors degree in 1943.
In 1944, she was united in marriage to Gene Silvey and to this union two children were born: Kim and James. The family made their home in Poughkeepsie, New York, where she devoted her time to caring for the children and home. In later years, she worked as a secretary for IBM. Gene preceded her in death in 1968. Harriett returned to Holdrege in 1976, where she spent many happy years.
Harriett was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, where she was active in many capacities and a member of the Sarah Church Circle. She was also a member of the Hardtimes Club, the Holdrege Literacy Council and a Charter Member of P.E.O. Chapter HM of Holdrege. She also enjoyed reading, travelling and conversation with her friends.
Besides her husband, Gene, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Kim in 1976.
She leaves to celebrate her life: son, James Silvey and his wife, Catherine of Gladstone, Missouri; two grandsons: Gene A. Silvey and his wife, Laura of Oak Harbor, Washington and Benjamin A. Silvey of Bellingham, Washington; longtime friend and caretaker, Sandy Schmoker of Holdrege; and other relatives and friends.
There will be no visitation as the family is honoring Harriett's wish for cremation.
A memorial has been established in Harriett's honor and kindly suggested to the Holdrege Area Public Library in lieu of flowers.
Expressions of caring and kindness can be sent to the family at www.nelsonbauerfh.com .
