Funeral services for Helen E. Tams will be conducted from the Trinity Lutheran Church in Stamford, NE, on Friday, May 27, 2011 at 2:30 p.m. with Reverend Thalia Woodworth officiating. Interment will be at the Stamford Cemetery.
Helen Ethel Tams, 93 years of age, of Stamford, passed away on Tuesday, May 24, 2011, at Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege, NE. Helen was born on February 15, 1918 on the family farm in rural Furnas County, southwest of Stamford. She was the second of four daughters born to Carl Eddie Ephriam "Ed" and Pheobe Ellen Christina (Swanson) Corbin. She attended grade school at District #41 in rural Furnas County. She later attended and graduated from Stamford High School with the class of 1935 and went two summers at Kearney State College.

Helen taught country school in Furnas and Harlan Counties for four years before she was married. On June 2, 1940 she was united in marriage to Leo Christof Tams at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Stamford. Helen and Leo were blessed with the birth of two boys: Rodney and Gayle. Leo and Helen farmed for 60 years, two miles north of Stamford. Leo passed away on October 1, 2001. Helen later moved into Stamford and since February of this year she made her home at Holdrege Memorial Homes.

After the boys were grown and married, Helen worked as a Sales Clerk for Preston Drug Co., in Oxford, NE for seven years.

Helen worked on the Staff of the Stamford Newsletter, was a member of the Women's Club and a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Stamford, where she served as Financial Secretary for several years.

Besides her parents, Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Leo; one granddaughter in infancy; two sisters in infancy; and two brother-in-laws: Glen Tams and his wife, Wilma, and Dale Tams.

Helen is survived by her two sons: Rodney Tams and his wife, Connie of Oxford, Gayle Tams and his wife, Pat of Stamford; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; one sister, Lois (Dale) Wentling of Oxford; sister-in-law, Lois Tams of Stamford and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held prior to the service at the church.

A memorial has been established in her memory and kindly suggested to the Trinity Lutheran Church.
