Howard C Barnes

Funeral Services for Howard C. Barnes will be held on Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege, Nebraska with Reverend Dr. W. Kirwin Stewart, Jr. officiating.  Interment will be held in the Alma Cemetery at Alma, Nebraska following the services with military honors provided by the United States Army Military Honors Team.

Howard Custer Barnes, 86 years of age, of Holdrege, (formerly of Alma) passed away on Saturday, June 24, 2017 at the Holdrege Memorial Homes.  Howard was born October 1, 1930 at Franklin, Nebraska, the fifth of eight children born to Semer L. and Lucy P. (Smith) Barnes.  Howard received his education from Franklin and Alma Public Schools.  Following his education, he was inducted into the United States Army, and served his country from December 5, 1951 until his honorable discharge on December 2, 1953.

After his service, Howard returned home to Alma.  Howard was employed in construction for a short time before he began a long career with Palmer Brothers Granite Company as a monument setter until his retirement.

He enjoyed fishing and camping in his younger years with his brothers and nephews.  Howard's entire life was devoted to others, caring for the needs of his parents when he was younger, and later in life his focus turned to caring for his brother, Wilford and his family.  He was an excellent cook, and every conversation with Howard was focused on his concern about the well-being of his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters:  Grace Barnes in infancy, Geneivie Kimberly, and Christina Klein; and three brothers:  Wilbur Barnes in infancy, Ernest Barnes, and Harmon Barnes; sister-in-law, Berdena Barnes.

Howard leaves to celebrate his life; his brother, Wilford Barnes of Holdrege; nephew, Randy Barnes and his wife, Brenda; niece, Karen Konzack and her husband, Joel all of Holdrege; and a host of other nieces; nephews; great-nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 27, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege.

A memorial has been established in Howard's honor and will be designated at a later date.
