Memorial Services for James E. Buttermore will be held on Thursday, May 4, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Alma, Nebraska with Pastor Jim Bendorf officiating. Private inurnment will be held prior to the service in the Naponee Cemetery at Naponee, Nebraska with Military Honors provided by the Hicks-Siegel American Legion Post #364 in conjunction with the United States Army Funeral Honors Team.
James Elroy "Jim" Buttermore, 90 years of age, passed away on Saturday, April 22, 2017 at the Good Samaritan Society Colonial Villa in Alma. He was born October 6, 1926, in Franklin County, Nebraska, one mile north of Franklin, the eldest of two children to Wilbern Poole and Grace Eva (Dieckman) Buttermore. Jim grew up and received his primary education in Franklin and graduated from Excelsior Union High School in Norwalk, California with the class of 1944. He enlisted in the Army one month prior to graduation.
On January 15, 1945, Jim was inducted into the United States Army and served his country during World War II. He was stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii and later served with the 55 th Med Port Transportation Corps. He was honorably discharged on August 27, 1946, with an Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, a World War II Victory Medal, and a Good Conduct Medal. Upon returning to Nebraska, he worked for a few years on the construction of the Harlan County Dam and for Amman Sand & Gravel.
On December 3, 1950, he was united in marriage to Lois Evelyn Amman in Naponee. They were blessed with four children: Diana, James, Gary and Alun. The family made their home in Republican City, Nebraska.
Jim worked for the United States Postal Service, as a rural Mail Carrier for over 30 years, and was named the Nebraska Rural Carrier of the year in 1984. He was a member of the Nebraska Rural Letter Carriers Association, serving two terms, as President, and was the District #4, Secretary-Treasurer, Vice-President, President, Committeeman and Steward.
Jim served on the Republican City Volunteer Fire Department and was Fire Chief for ten years, was a member of the Masonic Lodge #98, serving as Master Mason, a member of the Scottish Rite and was a Shriner with the Hastings Tehama Temple. He served as Scoutmaster of the Alma Boy Scout Troop #161 and the Republican City Troop #164 and received the Flat Rivers District Award of Merit in 1978, the Tri-Trails Council Silver Beaver Award in 1979, and served as the Scouting Sustaining Membership Chairman.
He enjoyed Boy Scouting, woodcarving, playing cards and traveling in their RV.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Frieda June Buttermore; and brother-in-law, Glenn Amman.
Jim leaves to celebrate his life; his wife, Lois of 66 years of Alma; daughter, Diana Miller of Cary, North Carolina; three sons: James Buttermore, D.D.S. and his wife, Maria of South Sioux City, Nebraska, Gary Buttermore and his wife, Deb of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Alun Buttermore and his wife, Megan of Salem, South Carolina; eleven grandchildren: Chris Miller and wife, Leigh, Michelle Miller and husband, Spencer Kostinsky, Jeff Buttermore and wife, Nicole Griffard, Jennifer Mahoney and husband, Tom, Matthew Buttermore and wife, Laura, Elissa Buttermore, Maggie Clayton and husband, Steven, Nathan Buttermore and wife, Elizabeth, Jaclyn Braa and husband, Jake, Aaron Buttermore and wife, Xiomarie and Jordan Buttermore; ten great-grandchildren: Mercedes, Brandon, Sela, Paige, Emelyn, Zoey, Lainey, Nolan, Ellee and Elaine; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Lorene and Rodney Richter of Naponee and Shirley and Leonard Dicke of McCook, Nebraska; and loved by many nieces and nephews, and friends.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 3, 2017 from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Bauer-Torrey & Mach Funeral Home in Alma. At 7:30 p.m. there will be Masonic Rites at the funeral home. Following the visitation cremation will take place.
A memorial has been established in Jim's honor and kindly suggested to the Republican City United Methodist Church.
