Funeral Services for James E. "Jim" Davenport will be conducted at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege, Nebraska on Saturday, February 1, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Tom Thompson officiating. Interment will be in the Orleans Cemetery at Orleans, Nebraska with military honors provided by the Harold Morin American Legion Post #184 of Orleans in conjunction with the United States Army Military Honor Guard.
James Edwin "Jim" Davenport, 59 years of age, of Hastings, Nebraska (formerly of Orleans and Cambridge, Nebraska), passed away on Sunday, January 26, 2014 at Mary Lanning Healthcare in Hastings. Jim was born August 2, 1954 at Holdrege, the fourth of five children born to Juddson O. and Nettie J. (Payne) Davenport. In July of 1963, the family moved from the farm north of Orleans into town. Jim received his primary education from a rural school north of Orleans and then continued at Orleans Public School. In 1967, they moved to Cambridge, Nebraska, where Jim graduated from high school with the class of 1973. He was then inducted into the United States Army in January of 1974 and served his country until his honorable discharge on July 28, 1977. He continued to serve in a reserve capacity until November 1, 1979. He then pursued higher education from Central Community College in Hastings, where he received his Associates Degree in Construction. Following his education, Jim was employed in construction at Grand Island, Nebraska for a few years until returning to Cambridge, where he was employed by the City of Cambridge. In recent years and at the time of his passing, Jim was employed by Wal-Mart in Hastings.
He was a lifelong member of the Harold Morin American Legion Post #184 in Orleans. Jim loved photography, and was well known for taking a week of vacation to capture the history of Nebraska from town to town. He was also an avid reader of several newspapers on the internet to keep up with current events and enjoyed crossword puzzles in his spare time. Jim could also appreciate a good joke from his family and friends.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; and brother-in-law, Marvin Skrdlant.
He leaves to mourn his passing; his three sisters: Cindy Johnson of Blue Hill, Nebraska, Jane Bolling of Knoxville, Tennessee, and Joy Davenport of Hastings; one brother, John Davenport and his wife, Dora of Atwood, Kansas; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held on Friday, January 31, 2014 from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege.
A memorial has been established in Jim's honor and kindly suggested to the Harold Morin American Legion Post #184 in Orleans.
