A joint Memorial Service for James G. "Jim" Johnson and Sophia "Irene" Johnson will be held on Friday, September 6, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege, Nebraska, with Pastor Daren Popple officiating. A private inurnment will be held prior to the service at Moses Hill Cemetery.
Sophia "Irene" Johnson, 87 years of age, of Holdrege, died on Monday, August 28, 2023, at the Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege. Irene was born on October 19, 1935, on her parent's farm in Phelps County, Nebraska, the only daughter, born to DeForrest "Dutch" and Louise (Pearson) Grove.
James Gordon "Jim" Johnson, 90 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away, on Thursday, August 15, 2024, at Holdrege Memorial Homes in Holdrege. Jim was born in Sumner, Nebraska, on May 29, 1934, the second of four children, born to Paul and Beulah (Cramer) Johnson. The family lived southeast of Sumner and he received his education and graduated from Sumner Public Schools, with the class of 1953.
Jim enlisted into the United States Army National Guard but was never called to active duty. He was united in marriage to Sophia "Irene" Grove on August 23, 1959. Jim continued farming and raising livestock, including cattle and hogs. The couple was blessed with six sons: Forrest, Kenneth, Michael, David, Tim, and Todd.
Jim enjoyed attending sales at the sale barn. He worked many different jobs including: at many different Hay Mills in the area, at Allmand Brothers in Holdrege, and at different packing plants.
He attended the First Baptist Church in Holdrege.
They were preceded in death by their parents; an infant son, David Johnson; and a grandson, Brian Johnson; and his siblings.
Jim is survived by his five sons: Forrest Johnson of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Kenneth Johnson and his wife, Lesa of Fort Plain, New York; Michael Johnson and his wife, Rochelle of Waverly, Nebraska; Tim Johnson and his wife, Karen of New Albin, Iowa; and Todd Johnson of Hildreth, Nebraska; ten grandchildren: Erin (Billy) Gantz; Terry (Melissa) Johnson; Stephanie Johnson; Karl Johnson; Danielle Johnson; Natasha Johnson; Casey (Radley) Carter; A.J. (Yesenia) Johnson; Bobbie (Daine) Rahmann; and Jackie Johnson; five great-grandchildren: Kaete Johnson; Theodore Gantz; and Rush, Hattie, and Winnie Rahmann; his sister, Marlys (Jim) Pearson of Holdrege; along with many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
There will not be a visitation, viewing, or memorial book signing the evening prior to the service. The family has honored their request for a cremation.
Memorials in Jim and Irene's honor are suggested to the First Baptist Church in Holdrege.
