James Lee "Jim" Layton, 40 years of age, of Holdrege passed away on Monday, August 8, 2011 at his home in Holdrege. Jim was born July 19, 1971 in Lincoln, Nebraska the youngest of two sons born to Jerome "Jerry" and Jan (Hasbrouck) Layton. He grew up in Holdrege, attending grade school and part of high school in Holdrege. He received his high school diploma from Kearney in 1990. He received his Associate of Applied Science degree in Auto Mechanics from New Mexico State University graduating with honors in 2001.

Jim's family was the most important part of his life. He especially enjoyed outdoor activities with his family.

Jim took pride in his work. He was an excellent mechanic and carpenter. He had a way with people. He loved animals – all animals. Over the years his family included several dogs, cats, fish, ducks, geese, chickens, a parrot, a pig and a rabbit. From early childhood and throughout his life, he rescued injured and homeless animals.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Holdrege.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Jordon Lee Layton in 1997; his grandparents, Alice Hasbrouck, Fred Hasbrouck, Margaret Layton and Larry Layton; two uncles: Byron Anderson and James Hasbrouck; and one great-uncle, Harry Holmes.

Survivors include his wife, Jessica Layton and three children: Justina, Jerimya and Jayme Layton of Holdrege; his parents: Jerry and Jan Layton of Oxford, Nebraska; one brother, Jeffrey "Jeff" Layton and his wife, Christine "Chris" and children, Ashley, Curtis and Emily Layton all of Oxford; parents-in-law, Dave and Jodi Edwards of Loco, Oklahoma; three sisters-in-law: Terri Renfo and her husband, Rob of Loco, Bandi Samson and her son, David Samson of Loco, Ashley Everett of Loco; one brother-in-law, James Everett of Loco; aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends.

There will be no visitation as the family is honoring his wish for cremation.

A memorial has been established in his memory and kindly suggested to the family at Jeff Layton, P.O. Box 453, Oxford, Nebraska 68967.
