The family made their home in Titusville, Pennsylvania, where Jim received his primary education from Pleasantville Public Schools in Pleasantville, Pennsylvania for nine years and then finished the 10th grade at Erie Public Schools in Erie, Pennsylvania. Later, the family moved to Hollinger, Nebraska where Jim's mother was hired to be a minister.

Besides his parents and wife, Mildred, Jim was preceded in death by: one daughter, Patricia Ann in infancy; brother-in-law, Don Malone and his wife, Jean; and a son-in-law, Mark Nash in June 2013.
