Funeral Services for Jared L. Ekholm will be held on Monday, November 22, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege, Nebraska with Pastor Murray Jones officiating. Inurnment will be held at the Ft. McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell, Nebraska on Tuesday, November 23, 2010 at 1:30 p.m. with military honors conducted by the North Platte Honor Guard and the U.S. Army National Guard Military Honors Team.
Jared LaWarren Ekholm, 84 years of age, of Swisher, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, November 13, 2010 at the Honey Creek Cottages in Swisher. He was born on February 26, 1926 on a farm 12 and ½ miles northwest of Holdrege, the eldest of five children born to Jared Wilhelm and Mae (Epping) Ekholm. Jared received his education from Holdrege Public Schools, graduating from Holdrege High School with the class of 1944. On August 25, 1944 he was inducted into the U.S. Army and served with the 34th Division in Italy until the end of the war when he was honorably discharged on August 20, 1946.
On May 28, 1948 he was united in marriage to Alberta Bernice Orsborn of Elm Creek, Nebraska. The couple was blessed with one son, Steven. Jared worked on road construction for the Phillips Company of McCook, Nebraska. The family made their home in western Nebraska, where Jared continued working in construction and Alberta taught school. Eventually the couple relocated to Iowa for 17 years. Before retirement the couple moved to Barrow, Alaska for three years, where Jared worked in maintenance for the school district.
Upon retirement in 1991, Jared and Alberta moved to a home he and his son built in the mountains west of Fort Collins, Colorado, where they spent many happy years. When Alberta became ill he moved to Swisher, Iowa, where he lived with his son until moving to Honey Creek Cottage two years ago.
Jared was preceded in death by his parents.
He leaves to mourn his passing: his wife, Alberta Ekholm of Mt. Carmel Nursing Home in Kearney, Nebraska; one son, Steve Ekholm and his wife, Collyer of Columbia, Missouri; one granddaughter, Sarah Ekholm of Los Muermos, Chile; two brothers: Maynard Ekholm and his wife, Patty of Farmington, New Mexico, W. Berniel Ekholm and his wife, Norma of Springfield, Missouri; two sisters: Renee Nelson and her husband, Robert "Hap" Nelson of Holdrege and Marcy Arrasmith and her husband, Dr. Donald Arrasmith of Omaha, Nebraska; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends.
Visitation will be held at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege on Sunday, November 22, 2010 from 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
A memorial has been established in his memory and will be designated at a later date.
