Jerome "Jerry" L. Layton

Jerome Lee "Jerry" Layton, 85 years of age, of Oxford, Nebraska, passed away on Monday, September 16, 2024, at Good Samaritan Society – Colonial Villa in Alma, Nebraska. Jerry was born in Fairbury, Nebraska, on November 7, 1938, to Lawrence "Larry" and Margaret (Loch) Layton. The Family later moved to Holdrege, Nebraska, where Jerry attended public school and graduated with the class of 1956.

On May 3, 1963, he was united in marriage to Janice Lee Hasbrouck in Kearney, Nebraska, and to this union, two sons were born: Jeffrey Lee and James Lee. Jerry and Janice recently celebrated 61 years of marriage. After high school, Jerry began working as a clerk for the CB&Q Railroad, later known as Burlington Northern Railroad. In 1969, he began work in the construction business, which he continued until working as a building inspector for the city of El Paso, Texas. He retired in 2004 and returned with his wife to Oxford to be with his sons, grandchildren, his special friend Jim Lerma, and other family. Jerry enjoyed spending time outdoors with his sons: hunting, fishing, boating, and camping. After his retirement, Jerry was able to spend more time fishing in his "fishing van". Jerry loved being with his family, especially on their family vacations.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, and his son James Layton.

He is survived by his wife, Janice Layton; one son, Jeff Layton and wife, Chris all of Oxford; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers: Thomas Layton and wife, Linda of Durham, North Carolina; and Mike Layton and wife, Marilyn of Holdrege, Nebraska; one sister, Barbara Anderson of Norwalk, Iowa; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

A private family service will be held at a later date. The family is honoring his wish for cremation.
