Funeral Services for Joan M. Hemelstrand will be conducted from the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege, Nebraska, on Thursday, September 10, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Tom Thompson, officiating. Interment will be in the Highland Cemetery at Bertrand, Nebraska.

Joan Marilyn Hemelstrand, 76 years of age, of Loomis, Nebraska, passed away on Sunday, September 6, 2009 at the Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege. Joan was born May 14, 1933 at Holbrook, Nebraska, the daughter of Floyd and Minnie (Lankston) Childers. She was baptized a Methodist in 1953. She received her education in Nebraska and Colorado.

On October 15, 1950 she was united in marriage to John Hemelstrand and to this union three children were born: John Melvin, Judith Monica and Julie Marie. The family made their home on a farm south of Bertrand in Gosper County, Nebraska, where Joan focused on raising their children and worked side-by-side with John on the farm. In 2003, John and Joan moved to Loomis.

One of Joan's favorite holidays was Christmas. She collected Santa Clauses and enjoyed the time spent with her family. Most of all she loved spending time with her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; granddaughter, Monica McClain; two brothers: Wayne Dunkin and Mackie Childers; and two sisters: Evelyn Gennrich and Addie Kehr.

She leaves to mourn her passing her husband, John of Loomis; one son, Johnny Hemelstrand of Arapahoe, Nebraska; two daughters: Judith McClain and her husband, Marvin of Loomis and Julie Monter and her husband, Charles of Aurora, Nebraska; ten grandchildren: Troy Hemelstrand, Heather Ehresman and her husband, Eric, Jared Hemelstrand and his wife, Sherida, Latisha Morse and her husband, Jerad, Samantha, Tabitha, and Miranda Monter, Joe McClain and his wife, Stephanie, Jon McClain and his wife, Brittany and Jessica McClain; twelve great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege on Wednesday, September 9, 2009 from 1:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

A memorial has been established in her memory and will be designated at a later date.
