Memorial Services for John S. Ulrichson will be held on Monday, October 12, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Christian Church in Alma, Nebraska with Pastor Larry Doubet officiating.  Private family inurnment will be held prior to services at the Alma Cemetery in Alma with Military Honors provided by the Fay Cady American Legion Post #118 of Alma in conjunction with the United States Army Military Honors Team.

John Steven Ulrichson, 79 years of age, of rural Alma, passed away on Wednesday, October 7, 2015 at his home.  John was born February 12, 1936, on the family farm, near Rope Creek, north of Alma in rural Harlan County, the second of three children born to Ralph Lee and Helen Arline (Henderson) Ulrichson.  He received his primary education from Bear District, north of Alma then attended South Sacramento School at Sacramento, Nebraska through the 8 th grade and graduated from Wilcox High School with the class of 1953.

On March 1, 1956, John was inducted into the United States Army.  He was stationed in Schwabach, Germany and served on an Expert Rifle Team, receiving many trophies and metals.  He was honorably discharged on December 17, 1957 and served in the Reserve Capacity until 1962.

Following his honorable discharge from the United States Army, John returned to Harlan County where he engaged in farming one mile east of Alma.  In 1977, the family moved 5 ½ miles north of Alma, where he continued to farm until his retirement.  John enjoyed raising livestock, especially cattle and hogs.

On August 4, 1963, John was united in marriage to Juanita Churchill at the First Christian Church in Alma.  John was baptized on Palm Sunday, March 22, 1964 at the First Christian Church.  To their union three children were born:  Amy, Lynn and James.  The couple also opened their home and heart to a foster daughter, Andrea.

John enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing and boating, skiing and family vacations.  He also enjoyed traveling throughout the United States attending his 56 th Field Artillery Battalion Army Reunions.  He was especially fond of the time spent with his grandkids.

John served in many capacities with the First Christian Church, including:  Deacon, Trustee and Elder.  He was also a member of the Huntley Lions Club and served as Chairman of the Board at the Alma CO-OP Elevator.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Paul Ulrichson; and a son-in-law, Mike Van Horn.

He leaves to celebrate his life, his wife of 52 years:  Juanita Ulrichson of rural Alma; daughters, Amy Van Horn of Mesa, Arizona and Lynn Steffanos and her husband, James of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; son, James Ulrichson and his wife, Teresa of Lincoln, Nebraska; special foster daughter, Andrea Shald and her husband, Jeff of Omaha, Nebraska; eight grandchildren:  Lillianna Steffanos, Justin Fox, Tiffanie, Tyler, John, and Tanner Ulrichson and Eric and Jonathan Penner; five great-grandchildren; brother, Dean Ulrichson and his wife, Ardys of Ames, Iowa; sister-in-law, Myrene Synder and her husband, Alvin of Alma; cousin, Jeanne Sherwood of Oxford, Nebraska; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A memorial book signing will be held on Sunday, October 11, 2015 from 1:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 1:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m. at the Bauer-Torrey & Mach Funeral Home in Alma.
