Mass of Christian Burial for Joy C. Sayler will be conducted from the All Saints Catholic Church in Holdrege, Nebraska on Friday, February 26, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. with Father Thomas Lux, officiating. Interment will be in the Prairie Home Cemetery at Holdrege with Military Honors provided by the Martin Horn American Legion Post #66 in conjunction with the United States Air Force Military Honors Team.
Joy Chapin Sayler, 88 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Saturday, February 20, 2010 at the Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege. Joy was born April 3, 1921 at St. John, Kansas, the second of four sons of Edmond Barstow and Emma (Shank) Sayler. Joy received his education at St. John, graduating from the St. John High School with the class of 1939. He then pursued higher education at the Denver University at Denver, Colorado, where he studied engineering.
During WW II, Joy served his country in the United States Army Air Corps from October 8, 1942 until his honorable discharge on November 24, 1945. He was awarded the Bronze Star as a Technical Sergeant. Joy later continued his service to his country in the United States Air Force Reserves from July 2, 1948 until his discharge on July 1, 1952.
On March 1, 1947, Joy was united in marriage to Regina I. Flierl, the couple was blessed with two children they adopted: Christopher and Theresa. The family made their home in Denver, Colorado, Borger, Texas, and Florence, Colorado before settling to Holdrege. Joy was employed in management with J.C. Penney for almost 36 years, retiring in 1981. He was then employed by Artistic Woven Labels in Holdrege as Personal Manager from 1981 until 1993.
He was a member of the All Saints Catholic Church in Holdrege; enjoyed golfing, skiing, hunting, gardening and yard work. Joy was a member and held offices in each of the following organizations: the V.F.W., American Legion, Lions Club, and Holdrege Chamber of Commerce and Ambassadors. Joy also enjoyed volunteering delivering Meals-On-Wheels for several years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Theresa Marie Sayler in 2006; and three brothers: Dean Sayler, Earl Sayler and his wife, Candy and Keith Sayler.
He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Regina Sayler of Holdrege; son, Chris Sayler of Atlanta, Georgia; three grandchildren: Angela Marie Sayler of Olathe, Kansas, Jenifer Burris of Clay Center, Nebraska, Kyle Sayler and his wife, Michaela of Auburn, Nebraska; four great-grandchildren: Zosha, Owen, Anna and Raegan; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 25, 2010 from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the All Saints Catholic Church in Holdrege with the Wake Service being held at 7:00 p.m.
A memorial has been established in his memory and kindly suggested to the All Saints Catholic School.
