Funeral Services for June D. Burkey will be conducted from the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege, Nebraska on Monday, March 9, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. with Reverend Jean Clayton, officiating. Interment will be in the Highland Cemetery at Bertrand, Nebraska.

June Dorothy Burkey, 89 years of age, of Bertrand, passed away on Wednesday, March 4, 2009 at the Bertrand Nursing Home. June was born June 9, 1919 southwest of Bertrand in Gosper County, Nebraska, the youngest of five children of Fred and Sylvia (Upthagrove) Schrader. She received her education at District #12 East School in Gosper County.

Following her education, June was united in marriage to Charles E. Burkey on April 8, 1936 and to this union ten children were born: Roberta, Susan, Peggy, Dottie, Bill, Marilyn, Bev, Larry, Mary and Brian. The family made their home on farms in Gosper County and Phelps County before settling and purchasing a farm east of Bertrand. While on the farm, June focused her efforts caring for her children and working side-by-side with her husband, Charles. She enjoyed gardening, canning vegetables, cooking, and later in years, ceramics as a hobby. In 1971, her husband, Charles preceded June in death and shortly thereafter she moved into Loomis, Nebraska. In 1976, June relocated to Oshkosh, Nebraska for seven years until returning to Bertrand to be near her family. In 2000, she began to make her home at the Bertrand Nursing Home-Assisted Living.

She leaves to mourn her passing her two sons: Bill Burkey and his special friend, Jan Lindgren of Lincoln, Nebraska and Brian Burkey of Lincoln; seven daughters: Roberta Dunse and her husband, Maynard of Republican City, Nebraska, Susan Anderson and her husband, Ron of Solon, Iowa, Peggy Kahler and her special friend, Lynn Otto of Arapahoe, Nebraska, Dottie Stehl and her husband, Lloyd of Bertrand, Marilyn Burkholder and her husband, Jim of Loomis, Bev Binning and her husband, Dave of Missouri Valley, Iowa and Mary Acker of Edgerton, Missouri; 15 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Larry; one brother, George Schrader; three sisters: Doris Gitchel, Ruth Wicklund and Eunice Lesser and son-in-law, Bob Acker.

June will lie in state at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege on Sunday, March 8, 2009 from 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. with the family greeting friends.
