Funeral Services for Kenneth E. Fischer will be held on Thursday, December 12, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Alma, Nebraska with Pastor Jim Bendorf officiating. Interment will be held in the Alma Cemetery following the services.
Kenneth Edwin Fischer, 97 years of age, of Alma, departed this life on Friday, December 6, 2019 at the Good Samaritan Society – Colonial Villa in Alma. Kenneth was born June 20, 1922, on the family farm eight miles south of Alma in Phillips County, Kansas, the second of six children to Albert and Mary (Kesecker) Fischer. Kenneth received his primary education from the Pleasant Hill District #98, located 1 ¼ miles east on Buffalo Road in Phillips County, Kansas, where he and his brother, Alfred had Violet Crider for their teacher. The family then moved into Nebraska, where the children attended the District #58, Golden Rod School on the banks of Prairie Dog Bay until 1936. Kenneth then entered Alma High School, where he graduated with the class of 1940.
Kenneth worked with his father on the family farm raising corn, wheat, milo, and Hereford cattle. He also started in the oil fields when Harlan County's first oil well was drilled on his Dad's property. Kenneth pumped over 20 wells retiring in the early 1980's. During this time he became known as the "Prairie Dog Pumper" on the CB radio.
On February 10, 1956, he was united in marriage to Fonda Rose Jones and they moved into Alma, where they built their new home in 1963. They continued to reside in their home until their passing.
Kenny was enrolled as a member of "The Cradle Roll" at the United Methodist Church in Alma on December 12, 1922. He was a lifelong member of the Alma United Methodist Church, where he served as Secretary, Trustee, and held many offices throughout the years. He and Fonda were instrumental in the building of the new church at the present location. They were proud to have served on the Building Committee to help make the dream of building a new church a reality. On July 5, 2009, he was preceded in death by his wife, Fonda Rose.
In his spare time he enjoyed reading, and studying the history of Phillips County. Kenneth was a quiet, gentle, unassuming man that was dedicated to his family and work. God has gained a good one.
Besides his parents, and wife, Fonda Rose; Kenneth was preceded in death by a granddaughter; two sisters: Francis in infancy; and Irene Lans; and three brothers: Alfred, Donald, and Keith Fischer.
Kenneth leaves to celebrate his life; his three children: Bev Blatchford and her husband, Bill of Bloomfield, Nebraska; Rick Fischer and his wife, Cindy of rural Long Island, Kansas; and Jerry Fischer and his wife, Carol of rural Phillipsburg, Kansas; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 11, 2019 from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Bauer-Torrey & Mach Funeral Home in Alma.
