Funeral Services for Kenton J. Peterson will be held on Friday, June 7, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at Trinity Evangelical Free Church in Holdrege, Nebraska, with Pastor Paul Bauman and Chaplain Kathy Doiel officiating. Interment will be held following the services, at the Prairie Home Cemetery at Holdrege.
Kenton James Peterson, 57 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Tuesday, June 4, 2019, at the Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege. He was born on October 2, 1961, in Kearney, Nebraska, the eldest of two children born to Roger Lee and Violet Virginia (Wallander) Peterson. Kenton attended the special education program at Holdrege Public Schools. Following his schooling, Kenton enjoyed working alongside Roger on the family farm, Sunny View Angus Farms and also loved helping Violet do the mowing, yardwork and gardening. Kenton was also employed as dishwasher at the Hotel Dale, the Cozy Inn Restaurant and at the Holdrege Memorial Homes; and enjoyed his time working at the Holdrege Recycling Center.
Through the years, Kenton was active in showing cattle with the Midwest Livestock 4-H Club, showing at the Phelps County Fair, Nebraska State Fair and AKSARBEN. He also enjoyed riding his bicycle and four-wheeler and swimming. In August of 1980, he earned a trip to New York to compete in the Special Olympics for swimming. He was an advocate for People First , which empowers people with developmental disabilities to self-advocate so that they can affect positive change at all levels of society. On December 1, 2014, Kenton began to make his home at Holdrege Memorial Homes, where he enjoyed many activities, including: attending Chapel, playing BINGO and Dominos and bus rides.
Kenton accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at a young age and was very active at the Trinity Evangelical Free Church in Holdrege; serving as an usher, a choir member and participating in various Sunday school classes.
He was preceded in death by: his father, Roger in 2015; maternal grandparents, Atlee and Mildred Wallander; paternal grandparents, Albert and Hazel Peterson; aunts: Kathryn Barker and her husband, Harlan; and Carolyn Fitch; and uncle, Delbert Wallander and his wife, Virginia.
Kenton leaves to celebrate his life: his mother, Violet Peterson of Holdrege; his sister, Darla Aegerter and her husband, Jeff of Seward, Nebraska; one nephew, Kane Aegerter of Seward; aunts: Sharon Florom and her husband, Rodger of Potter, Texas; and Carmen Stradal and her husband, Franklin of Holdrege; uncles: Bruce Wallander and his wife, Darlene of Bertrand, Nebraska; Robert Wallander and his wife, Mary of rural Loomis, Nebraska; and Jerry Fitch of Commerce City, Colorado; and a host of cousins, and many friends.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 6, 2019 from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege.
A memorial has been established in Kenton's honor, and kindly suggested to the family for later designation.
