Kerri was born on August 28, 1984, in Kearney, Nebraska, the daughter of Gina Sohn and Michael L. Peterson. Kerri graduated from Red Cloud High School, in Red Cloud, Nebraska, with the class of 2002. She then attended Central Community College in Hastings, Nebraska and studied Early Childhood Development.
On July 28, 2015, Kerri was united in marriage to Mike Bernstrauch at the North Park in Holdrege. Together the couple were blessed with two children: Aryah and Lyric. Mike took care of Kerri's children, Treyton, Kayleb and McKennah as his own.
Kerri worked various jobs including cashiering, corrections officer, and a preschool teacher at Trinity Evangelical Free Church. Kerri was most recently working at Country Cookin' in Holdrege, where her infectious smile and willingness to help others will be missed.
She was a member of the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Holdrege and was baptized there on January 22, 2020. This was a special moment for Kerri, as the whole family was baptized together.
