Memorial services for Laurene R. Abrahamson will be held on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the Fridhem Lutheran Church in Funk, Nebraska with Reverend Daren Popple officiating. A private family interment will be held in the Prairie Home Cemetery at Holdrege, Nebraska, prior to the services at the church.
Laurene Ruth Abrahamson, 97 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at the Holdrege Memorial Homes. Laurene was born November 15, 1919 in Wagner, South Dakota, the third of four children born to Frank and Maude (Peters) Conroy. Laurene began her primary education in Kimball, South Dakota, until moving with her family to Shelton, where she attended Shelton Public School and graduated from Shelton High School in 1937. She then pursued higher education at the Kearney State Teacher's College in Kearney, Nebraska to receive her teaching credentials.
While in Shelton, Laurene was baptized and confirmed at the United Methodist Church. Following her education, Laurene taught school for four years. She was then employed by the Platte Valley Bank in Kearney as a bookkeeper.
On January 20, 1950 she was united in marriage to Paul W. Abrahamson. The couple made their home on a farm southwest of Axtell on Paul's grandparent's homestead, which has been in the Johnson family since 1879. Paul and Laurene engaged in farming and ran a cow/calf operation for the next 35 years. In 1985, they retired and moved into Holdrege. After moving off the farm, Laurene and Paul enjoyed traveling together throughout the United States and overseas. On May 18, 2001, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul. In 2007, Laurene began to make her home at Holdrege Memorial Homes, where she enjoyed the activities.
Laurene has been a devoted member of the Fridhem Lutheran Church in Funk since 1950, where she was active with WELCA. Laurene was also active with the North Lake Women's Club, enjoyed bowling on a league team when she was younger, and she was always ready to play cards, work a crossword puzzle, or play Bingo.
Besides her husband, Paul; Laurene was preceded in death by three brothers: Harold Conroy and his wife, Helen, Lee Conroy and his wife, Stella, and Glendale Conroy and his wife, Maxine; brother-in-law, Roger Abrahamson and his wife, Margery; sister-in-law, Violet Grove and her husband, Dale; three nieces: Joyce Abrahamson, Sandra Conroy, and Mary Conroy; and one nephew, Ronald Grove; as well as other extended family.
She leaves to celebrate her life; a host of nieces and nephews including: Ruth Johnson and her husband, Bill of Holdrege, Phyllis Dewald and her husband, Ray of Delmont, South Dakota, Lee Grove and his wife, Grace of Axtell, Nebraska, Janice Abrahamson of Axtell, Harriet Reese and her husband, Tim of Holdrege, Wendy Skallberg and her husband, John of Holdrege, Gary Conroy and his wife, Carolyn of Spencer, Nebraska, Gene Conroy and his wife, Elizabeth of Payson, Arizona, Gail Jones and her husband, Bob of Bennett, Colorado, Nona Dubbs and her husband, Darrell of Grand Island, Nebraska, Jackie Weavers of Emmett, Idaho, Max Conroy of Bella Vista, Arkansas, Jerry Conroy and his wife, Sharon of Winchester, Tennessee, and Jeanne Sheets and her husband, Norman of Hastings, Nebraska; and other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held on Monday, April 17, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege.
A memorial has been established in Laurene's honor and kindly suggested to the Fridhem Lutheran Church or Holdrege Memorial Homes.
