Celebration of Life Service for LaVaughn F. Larson will be held on Tuesday, June 5, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at the Trinity Evangelical Free Church in Holdrege, Nebraska with Pastor Murray Jones and Chaplain DeWane Dow officiating. Interment will be held in the Sandstrom Cemetery in rural Phelps County, Nebraska at 1:30 p.m.

LaVaughn Fae Larson, 98 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Friday, June 1, 2018, at Christian Homes Care Community in Holdrege.  She was born on April 3, 1920, southwest of Hartington in Cedar County, Nebraska, the second of five children born to Ray and Florence (Collier) Flaugh.  LaVaughn attended Harmony rural school District #98, and then graduated from Hartington High School with the class of 1937.  She went on to continue her education at Wayne State Teacher's College, where she graduated in 1941.  She taught Home Economics, English and Science in the Loomis, Atkinson and Bertrand school districts.

On June 1, 1944, LaVaughn was united in marriage to Raymond Larson, and to this union three daughters were born: Bonnie, Connie and Renee.  They made their home north of Loomis on the family farm, until moving into Holdrege in 1980.

LaVaughn was a longtime member of the Holdrege Literacy Council, and the Westmark Evangelical Free Church north of Loomis, where she was active with White Cross.  She enjoyed working with children in Sunday school and 4-H.  She worked as a private tutor with the Adult Basic Education (GED) program, and was a past president of the District V Home Economics teachers.  LaVaughn also enjoyed sponsoring Pep Clubs in all the schools where she taught.

On March 5, 2001, she was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond.  In 2008, LaVaughn began to make her home at the Christian Homes Care Community, where she resided until her passing.  While at Christian Homes she started a White Cross group with the residents.  They enjoyed getting together and making bandages to send to missionaries overseas.  Lavaughn also started a Sunday evening Singspiration Fellowship for fellow residents.  She enjoyed playing the piano for the singing.  Scrabble became one of her favorite pastimes.  She was always ready to play when family or friends stopped by.

LaVaughn dearly loved her family.  She knew the names and birthdays of all of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.  She gave them the greatest gift she could give by praying for each one of them daily.

LaVaughn accepted Jesus as her savior while sitting at her kitchen table one morning, listening to M.R. DeHaan preach over KRVN radio.  When Pastor DeHaan asked if there was anyone out there that wanted to give their life to Christ, LaVaughn raised her hand and prayed the sinner's prayer, asking Jesus to be her Savior.

Besides her parents and her husband, Raymond; LaVaughn was preceded in death by two brothers: Donnelly Flaugh, and Ralph Flaugh and his wife, Dorothy; and six brothers-in-law:  Clifton Larson and his wife, Gladys; Ralph Larson; Roland Larson and his wife, Mary; Elliott Larson and his wife, Delores; Elton Larson and his wife, Mavis; and Warren Larson and his wife, Lois.

LaVaughn leaves to celebrate her life; her three daughters: Bonnie Garwood and her husband, Everett of Dayton, Nevada; Connie Larson of Minneapolis, Minnesota; and Renee Holen and her husband, Mike of rural Loomis, Nebraska; 14 grandchildren:  Burt Garwood and his wife, Michele; Emily Hart and her husband, Leigh; Elaine Vogan and her husband, Andrew; Philip Garwood and his wife, Heather; Jared Garwood and his wife, Meredith; Jessica Wohler and her husband, Peter; Krista Conley and her husband, Jason; Hal Sturdevant and his wife, Renee, Sarah Wetzler; Jennifer Kaps and her husband, Marlo; Erik Holen and his wife, Kylee; Ben Holen and his wife, Maria; Wade Holen and his wife, Connie; Corrine Pistulka and her husband, Paul; forty-five great-grandchildren; one brother, Virgil Flaugh and his wife, Ruth of Hartington, Nebraska; one sister, June Weber and her husband, John of Plainview, Nebraska; sister-in-law, Rosie Hartmann of Bertrand; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.
