Funeral Services for LaVern R. Holen will be conducted from the Westmark Evangelical Free Church of rural Loomis, Nebraska on Saturday, July 26, 2008 at 1:30 p.m. with Reverend Rick Smith, officiating. Interment will be in the Sandstrom Cemetery in Phelps County, Nebraska.
LaVern Robert Holen, 87 years of age, of Kearney, Nebraska, (formerly of Overton, Nebraska) passed away on Tuesday, July 22, 2008 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. LaVern was born October 16, 1920 on the family farm north of Bertrand in Phelps County, Nebraska, the third of four sons born to William and Opal (Karr) Holen. He received his education at Bertrand. At a young age, LaVern sacrificed his education to work for the Civilian Conservation Corps in the Sandhills to help support the family farm. On September 19, 1942 he was inducted into the United States Army, serving his country during WWII with the 744th Light Tank Battalion until his honorable discharge on October 10, 1945. Following his service he returned home to the family farm in Phelps County.
On June 6, 1948 he was united in marriage to Eleanor Mae Enochs and to this union two children were born: Steven and Peggy. The family made their home on a farm south of Overton, where they engaged in farming. Later in years LaVern partnered with Eleanor in their lawn mower distributorship.
LaVern was an avid baseball fan and enjoyed music and traveling with Eleanor following retirement. He had a unique sense of humor and loved being around people. On August 9, 2006 he was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor.
He leaves to mourn his passing his son, Steve Holen and his wife, Kathleen of Erie, Colorado; daughter, Peggy Holen of Kansas City, Missouri; granddaughter, Korena Holen of Kearney, one brother, Kenneth Holen of Lexington, Nebraska and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Besides his wife he was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers: Bernard Holen and Neil Holen.
LaVern will lie in state at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege on Friday, July 25, 2008 from 1:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
A memorial has been established in his memory and will be designated at a later date.
