Lee Mardean High, 80 years of age, of Grand Island, Nebraska (formerly of Holdrege and Bertrand, Nebraska) passed away on Wednesday, December 27, 2006 at the Veteran's Administration Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. Lee was born April 1, 1926 near Bertrand in Phelps County, Nebraska, the third of four children of Leonard and Irene (Johnson) High. Lee received his primary education from Ash Grove Country School in Phelps County. He then attended Bertrand High School for three years and graduated from Holdrege High School with the class of 1944. During his high school career he had a leading role in the Jr. Class Play, played football on the Holdrege varsity team and was on the debate team that was selected to go to Lincoln, Nebraska for state competition.

On August 25, 1944, Lee was inducted into the United States Army and was stationed in Italy where he served his country until his Honorable Discharge on June 29, 1946. After his discharge he returned to Holdrege and was employed by several different business. On February 17, 1950, Lee re-enlisted in the U.S. Army until March 31, 1953 during the Korean War. Following his discharge, Lee lived in Wichita, Kansas, where he worked in an aircraft plant. In 1955, he returned to Holdrege where he worked in construction. Lee began having medical problems, leaving him unable to work. He spent his last years in the Sunrise View Apartments before moving to the Nebraska Veteran's Home in Grand Island.

He leaves to mourn his passing his sister, Orpha Anderson of Hastings, Nebraska; one brother, Paul High and his wife, RoJean High of Littleton, Colorado; three nephews, two nieces and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial has been established in his memory and will be designated at a later date.
