Private Graveside Services for Leon F. Harder will be held at the Prairie Home Cemetery, in Holdrege, Nebraska with Pastor Paul Ferrarone officiating.
Leon Harder, 71 years of age, of Alma, Nebraska passed away on Friday, February 6, 2015 after a brief battle with cancer at his home in Alma. Leon was born April 2, 1943, in Holdrege, Nebraska, the younger of two sons to Charles J. "Charlie" and Elvida Mae "Vi" (Carson) Harder. He grew up on a farm on what is now the northern area of Holdrege. He received his education and graduated from Holdrege High School with the class of 1961. After his prep school education, Leon pursued higher education at the University of Nebraska at Wesleyan as a Music Major. He took a hiatus from school, returning to Kearney State College and receiving his Bachelor's Degree in Special Education Resources. Leon was a member of the Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity while attending Kearney State College.
Upon his graduation, he took a position with the ESU #11 in Holdrege. Leon then worked for the Alma Public School System as the Special Education Teacher and Resource Teacher.
On August 21, 1971, Leon was united in marriage to Deborah DonnaKay Schaepler in Arapahoe, Nebraska. To this union, one son, Christian C. Harder was born. The family made their home in Alma. Leon and Deborah later divorced. In 2002, Leon retired from the Alma School System.
Leon enjoyed restoring furniture and vehicles, fishing and hunting. Following his scholastic career, Leon worked as a bartender and filled other positions as needed, at Patterson Harbor Marina. He truly enjoyed helping others in his teaching and retirement years.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Leon leaves to mourn his passing, his son, Christian Harder of Alma; brother, Larry Harder and his wife, Claudia of Waco, Texas; a host of cousins in the Holdrege area, former students, beloved friends and large adopted family at Patterson Harbor.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 11, 2015 from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting friends from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Bauer-Torrey & Mach Funeral Home in Alma.
A memorial has been established in Leon's honor and kindly suggested to the Teammates Mentoring Program in Alma or the Leon Harder Scholarship Fund.
