Funeral Services for Lester A. Harmon will be conducted from the First United Methodist Church at Holdrege, Nebraska on Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at 11:00 A.M. with Reverend Dale Lambert, officiating. Private Family burial will be held at a later date at the Stockton Cemetery at Stockton, Kansas.
Lester Arthur Harmon, 78 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Saturday, September 18, 2010 at the Holdrege Memorial Homes. Lester was born August 14, 1932, in Smith County, west of Smith Center, Kansas, the second of six children born to William and Alvina (Geise) Harmon. He received his education from rural schools in Smith County, Kansas. Lester was inducted into the United States Navy on July 13, 1951 and served his country until he was honorably discharge on July 1, 1955.
Following his education, Lester drove truck, did construction work and mostly worked as a heavy equipment operator for the Kearney County Department of Roads for over 20 years. Following his retirement in 1993, Lester enjoyed helping his step-son with spring planting and harvest work for several years. In 1955, he was united in marriage to Velta Eller and to this union two children were born: Angela and Kitty. Lester also adopted Velta's daughter, Deanna, who he loved and treated as his own. In 1966, Lester was united in marriage to Twila Jean Combs. With this marriage, the family would make additions to the family of two sons: Randy and Stanley. Twila preceded him in death on April 24, 1990. On January 25, 1991, Lester was united in marriage to Donna Nitchie. Donna's family grew to love Lester as a dad and granddad. The couple resided in Holdrege, where they enjoyed family gatherings, dancing, traveling, camping, fishing, and playing games with other couples.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Holdrege.
Besides his wife, Twila he was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Bob Harmon; three sisters: Hilda Cochran, Betty Harmon and Mary Harmon at the age of 5.
He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Donna of Holdrege; three daughters: Deanna Roach of North Carolina, Angie Roades and her special friend, Roy Standifur and Kitty Harmon both of Eldorado, Kansas; adopted son, Gary Lindholm and his wife, Gail of North Carolina; step-children: Susan Wyatt and her husband, Richard of Omaha, Nebraska, Bryan Nitchie and his wife, Jean of Holdrege, Don Nitchie and his wife, Pat of Sioux City, Iowa, Teresa Struble and her husband, Larry of Colorado Springs, Colorado; a host of grandchildren; great-grandchildren; brother, Dean Harmon of Denver, Colorado; brothers-in-law: Ted Cochran of Denver, Colorado and Gayle Bergstrom and his wife, Deanna of Wilcox, Nebraska; sisters-in-law: Barb Noeller of Holdrege, Shirley Hargis and her husband, Ken of Wilcox, Nancy Arnt of Boulder, Colorado; three nieces who were like daughters: Carol Cambridge and her special friend from Selina, Kansas, Connie Jones and her husband, Don from Beloit, Kansas, Sharon Derwett and her husband from Texas; other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege on Tuesday, September 21, 2010 from 1:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
A memorial has been established in his memory and kindly suggested to the First United Methodist Church or to the donor's choice.
