Memorial Services for Lloyd A. (Stubby) Stehl will be held Thursday, March 22, 2018 at 2:30 p.m. at Hope Lutheran Church in rural Smithfield, Nebraska with Reverend Tim Glendening officiating. A private family inurnment will be held prior to the services at Highland Cemetery at Bertrand, Nebraska.
Lloyd Allen Stehl, 73 years of age, of Bertrand, passed away on Saturday, March 17, 2018 at the Good Samaritan Society - St. John's Center in Kearney, Nebraska. Lloyd was the first child born to Reuben and Beulah (Dyer) Stehl on May 31, 1944 in Holdrege, Nebraska. He attended Tracyville School through 6th grade, then graduated from Bertrand Community High School with the class of 1962. He was baptized and confirmed at Hope Lutheran Church, attended the United Methodist Church in Bertrand, and returned to Hope Lutheran in his later years. He attended Southeast Community College in Milford, Nebraska, and initially worked in auto body repair. He later worked at the Bertrand CO-OP Exchange, in commodities, marketing, and real estate.
On July 21, 1963, he was united in marriage to Dot Burkey at Hope Lutheran Church near Smithfield, and to this union three children were born: Kevin, Angela, and Kellie. While they spent their early years of marriage in Lincoln, the family returned to the Bertrand area and raised their family in Phelps and Gosper counties.
Lloyd enjoyed fishing, hunting, auto body painting, photography, preparing good food, telling stories, and sharing time with friends and family. He especially enjoyed the memories of a hunting trip with Willard Sargent, and hunting elk in the mountains of Colorado. He was a past member of the Bertrand Volunteer Fire Department, where he served as chairman, vice chairman, captain, assistant captain, and remained an honorary member of the department until his passing.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents; his parents: Reuben and Beulah Stehl; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Dick and June Burkey; and brothers-in-law: Larry Burkey and Bob Acker.
Stubby leaves behind his wife of 54 years, Dot Stehl, of Bertrand; their children: Kevin Stehl and his wife, Sara of Bertrand; Angie DeFilipps and her husband, Charlie of Smithfield; and Kellie Stehl of Holdrege; seven grandchildren: Dusty Stehl and his special friend, Mollie Bartlett of Omaha, Nebraska; Brandon Stehl and his wife, Janelle of Kearney; Shelby Stehl of McCook, Nebraska; Riley Stehl of Bertrand; Shane Wissmann and his wife, Leah of Grand Island, Nebraska; Skylar Langenberg and her husband, Derek of Minden, Nebraska; and K.C. DeFilipps of Kearney; two great-grandchildren: Breelyn Langenberg of Minden, and Bennett Stehl of Kearney; one sister, Jan Lilyhorn and her husband, Dale of Raymond, Nebraska; brothers-in-law: Bill Burkey and his special friend, Jan Lindgren and Brian Burkey, all of Lincoln, Nebraska; sisters-in-law: Roberta Dunse and her husband, Maynard of Republican City, Nebraska; Susan Anderson and her husband, Ron of Solon, Iowa; Peggy Kahler and her special friend, Lynn Otto of Arapahoe, Nebraska; Marilyn Burkholder and her husband, James of Loomis, Nebraska; Beverly Binning and her husband, Dave of Missouri Valley, Iowa; and Mary Acker of Edgerton, Missouri; along with a host of many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
A memorial has been established in Lloyd's honor and is kindly suggested to the family for later designation.
