Lois Jean Melton, 85 years of age, of Alma (formerly of Naponee), passed away on Friday, October 3, 2014 at the Colonial Villa Good Samaritan Society in Alma. Lois was born August 13, 1929 at her parent's home in Phillips County, Kansas, the second of five children born to Roy E. and Grace (Frazer) Munyon. She received her education from Phillipsburg Public Schools, graduating in 1947.

On July 11, 1950, Lois was united in marriage with Bernard L. Melton in Phillipsburg, Kansas. This union was blessed with two sons: Ronald and Dean. The family made their home in Naponee, where Lois Jean focused on raising the boys. She had a rural route as an Avon Representative for numerous years. Lois also worked for Claud and Beulah Hale at Hales Grocery in Naponee, Elton and Ardith Lutjeharms at Lutjeharms Market and Norman and Barbara Kerr at Kerr's Kountry Store both in Republican City, Nebraska. Lois then began a 22 year career at Colonial Villa Good Samaritan Society in Alma. She joked about working there until she became a resident and enjoyed working with and training many of the staff who have cared for her in her last months. She did, however, retire before moving to Alma several years later.

Lois attended the Naponee Wesleyan Church where she sang in the choir and was a member of the United Methodist Women when her boys were at home.

She and Bernard were members of a local card club, traveling to each other's homes to play pitch. Lois assisted with the Naponee Soup Suppers, baking pies and preparing soups. In her spare time, Lois cooked, baked, gardened and canned. The fruits of these labors were shared with family and friends. She never did anything in a small way, so there was always enough to share. She welcomed one and all to her home. In later years, she enjoyed crocheting and crafting, as well.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bernard in 2010; siblings and their spouses: Doris and Chuck Jacobs, Shirley and Roger Shultz, Donald and Gayle Munyon; and brother-in-law, Nat Berney.

Lois leaves to mourn her passing, her sons: Ronald Melton and his wife, Lori of Woodward, Oklahoma and Dean Melton and his wife, Dianna of Alma; four grandchildren: Sara Zikmund and her husband, Tom, Ryan Melton and Brooke all from Alma, Matthew Melton and his wife, Leslie of Moore, Oklahoma and Joshua Melton and Kayla of Norman, Oklahoma; six great-grandchildren: Halle and Bryson Melton, Barett and Cole Zikmund, Reyce Melton and Kinlie Edelen; sister, Betty Berney of Phillipsburg, Kansas; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A memorial has been established in Lois Jean's honor and kindly suggested to the Colonial Villa Good Samaritan Society of Alma.
