Funeral Services for Lorraine Enquist will be held on Monday, February 15, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Holdrege, Nebraska with Reverend Jamie Strickler and Mr. Wayne Carlson officiating. Interment will be in the Prairie Home Cemetery at Holdrege following the services.
Lorraine Enquist, 98 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Wednesday, February 10, 2016 at the Christian Homes Care Community at Holdrege. She was born June 2, 1917 on the family farm near Keene in Kearney County, Nebraska, the second of five children born to Sieford and Mabel (Olson) Carlson. She received her education from Axtell Public Schools, graduating from Axtell High School with the class of 1934. Following her education, she moved to Holdrege and worked in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Burgeson for twelve years.
On January 16, 1947 she was united in marriage to Russell Edwin Enquist at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Holdrege and to this union three children were born: Kathryn, Arlan and Janice. The family made their home on a farm east of Holdrege, where they engaged in farming and cattle feeding. She focused her efforts on raising their children and assisted when necessary on the farm. In 1979, Russell and Lorraine moved into Holdrege.
She was baptized and confirmed at the Bethany Lutheran Church and later transferred her membership to the Bethel Lutheran Church, where she was active in bible study and serving committees, quilted, and enjoyed visiting shut-in church members. She also enjoyed the friendship bonds formed in her sewing club, friends that were devoted to each other for over fifty years. Lorraine was an excellent cook and her baked goods were delicious, especially her cinnamon rolls. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. On September 13, 2006, she was preceded in death by her husband, Russell. In January of 2006, Lorraine then began to make her home at the Christian Homes Care Community.
She leaves to celebrate her life; her son, Arlan Enquist of Holdrege; two daughters: Kathryn Ronhovde and her husband, Ron of Holdrege and Janice Morrow and her husband, David of Hastings, Nebraska; six grandchildren: Carrie Veal and her husband, Todd, Kirk Ronhovde and Jeff Enquist all of Holdrege, Kelsey Enquist and her husband, William Barrera of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Sarah Morrow and Abby Morrow both of Hastings, Nebraska; six great-grandchildren: Lindsay and Zane Veal, Nevaeh Morrow, Owen Phelps, and Charlotte and Nyah Barrera; one sister, Gevon Holt of Westmoreland, Kansas; two sisters-in-law: Betty Carlson of Woodriver, Nebraska and Gracia Harms of Waverly, Iowa and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by daughter-in-law, Gayla Enquist; grandson, Nathan Morrow; father-in-law and mother-in-law: Edwin and Alice Enquist; two brothers: Marlyn Carlson and his wife, Beverly and Burdette Carlson; one sister, Adeline Swanson and her husband, Vernon; two sisters-in-law: Elaine Enquist in infancy and Leona Peterson and her husband, Quinten and two brothers-in-law: Ray Harms and Carl Holt.
