Mass of Christian Burial for Lucille M. Matthies will be held on Tuesday, October 24, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Orleans, Nebraska, with Monsignor Paul Witt as celebrant. Interment will be held in the Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery at Orleans following the services.
Lucille Mary Matthies, 80 years of age, of Oxford, Nebraska, passed away on Thursday, October 19, 2017, at the Holdrege Memorial Homes in Holdrege, Nebraska. Lucille was born September 15, 1937, at Alma, Nebraska, the eldest of two children born to Charles P. and Laura L. (Carroll) Shelton. She received her education from Alma Public Schools and graduated as the valedictorian of her class from Alma High School with the class of 1955. Lucille then pursued higher education at the Edgewood College in Madison, Wisconsin, before returning home to Nebraska.
On August 29, 1956, Lucille was united in marriage to Loyd R. Matthies, and to this union three children were born: Tom, Mary, and Julie. They made their home in Leadville, Colorado, for a short period of time. In the 1960s, they moved to Orleans, and in 1966, they settled to Oxford where they resided the remainder of their married lives. Lucille was employed by the Oxford Library until 1975 when she became the secretary of the Oxford Elementary School until her retirement in 1999. "Mrs. Matthies" touched the lives of many young children during her years at the school and was, as a result, touched by them.
Lucille was a member of the St. Michael's Catholic Church and Altar Society in Oxford, as well as serving as church organist for over 25 years. She also held a seat on the Board of Directors of the Library for several years and devoted many hours volunteering at the Oxford Thrift Shop. During her spare time, Lucille enjoyed playing pinochle and reading. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the highlights of her life, and in return, they adored Grandma. She always served as a "constant" in their lives.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, James Shelton, and his wife, Zella; and a niece, Melissa.
Lucille leaves to celebrate her life; her husband, of 61 years, Loyd Matthies of Oxford; one son, Tom Matthies and his wife, Rhonda of Overton, Nebraska; two daughters: Mary Rau and her husband, Larry of Ainsworth, Nebraska, and Julie Kaczanowski of Kearney, Nebraska; ten grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers-in-law: Lynn Matthies and his wife, Lois of Salida, Colorado, and Floyd Matthies and his wife, Sharlene of Littleton, Colorado; sister-in-law, Betty Watson of Sacramento, California; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Visitation and Rosary will be held at the church in Oxford, on Monday, October 23, 2017 from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., with the Rosary being recited at 7:00 p.m. at the St. Michael's Catholic Church in Oxford.
A memorial has been established in Lucille's honor, and will be designated at a later date.
