Elizabeth Marie Peden, 85 years of age, of Orleans, passed away on Monday, January 31, 2022, in Claremore, Oklahoma. Marie was born in Eddyville, Nebraska on November 30, 1936, the fourth of twelve children born to Rufus and Mary (Brown) Jewett. She attended Overton High School, graduating with the class of 1954. Following high school, she went to summer school and began teaching country school three months later.  For twenty years, Marie taught during the school year and spent summers working on her degree, which she received in 1974.

On July 26, 1959, she was united in marriage to William Lee "Bill" Peden at the Overton Christian Church in Overton, Nebraska and this union was blessed with two children:  Richard Lee and Teresa Marie.  The couple also raised a foster daughter, Lydia, as their own since she was 11 years old.

The family made their home north of Cozad, Nebraska, and later settled in Lexington, Nebraska, where Marie taught in Dawson County District #22 and Sheridan County.  In 1972, the family began to make their home in Orleans, where Marie accepted a teaching position at Carter School District, North of Orleans, from 1972 to 1974, when it closed.  She then began teaching at Orleans Elementary School, where she retired following a 46 year teaching career.

Marie and Bill also helped many children throughout the years.  Whether it was feeding a child for an evening, taking them in long-term, or molding them into the family, they took care of their needs.

Marie was a member of Orleans Presbyterian Church and Delta Kappa Gamma International Society for Key Women Educators. She enjoyed family, children, animals, and the outdoors.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents, Rufus and Mary Jewett; father-in-law and mother-in-law, John Jesse and Lucille (Asher) Peden; her husband, Bill Peden in 2019; daughter, Teresa Peden in 2020; brothers, Donald Jewett and his wife, Belva; Jimmy Jewett; and Larry Jewett; sisters: Myra; and Mary Ann; and a sister-in-law, Connie Jewett.
