The funeral service for Marilyn F. Young will be held on Friday, June 24, 2022 at 2:30 p.m. at the Loomis Evangelical Free Church in Loomis, Nebraska with Pastor Tom Thompson and Chaplain DeWane Dow officiating. Interment will be held at the Moses Hill Cemetery in Phelps County, Nebraska, following the service.

Marilyn Faye Young, 89 years of age, of Holdrege, Nebraska, passed away, on June 20, 2022, at the Christian Homes Care Community in Holdrege. Marilyn was born on Easter Sunday, April 16, 1933, on the farm three miles north of Wilcox, Nebraska. She was the second of five children, born to Otto B. and Julia E. (Anderson) Mattson. Marilyn was baptized as a baby at the Salem Church north of Wilcox and as an adult in the fall of 1950 by Rev. Paul Cassel at the Trinity Evangelical Free Church in Holdrege. Marilyn accepted the Lord at twelve years old while attending Bible School at Wilcox Community Church and was a strong Christian for the rest of her life. She received her primary education at Wilcox Public School and later attended and graduated from Holdrege High School, with the class of 1950. While in high school she worked at the Hested's Store.
On August 20, 1950, she was united in marriage to Neil Phillip Young at the Trinity Evangelical Free Church in Holdrege. To this union, three children were born: Cynthia Lou, Nancy Renee, and Randall Scott. The family made their home on the farm southwest of Holdrege and later moved to their new home in 1975 near the original homestead. The couple moved into Holdrege in 2015.
She went to work at Becton-Dickinson in Holdrege in 1968 and retired in 1994. Upon her retirement, she started working at Christian Homes in the Activities Department, Holdrege Floral and started her own catering business, Grandma's Goodies. She published her cookbook which was released in September of 2010. After letting up on some of her catering she worked at the Holdrege Country Club. She enjoyed gardening and had flowers in several areas in her large yard. Residents of Christian Homes and Holdrege Memorial Home were entertained in her gardens including a delicious lunch for many years. The local Garden Club sponsored many tours of her yard.
Marilyn led an active life serving as a 4-H leader for 20 years, Sunday School teacher for 25 years, leader of the Y-Teen Club at Loomis High School, served on the Extension Service Board and the Christian Homes Care Community Board, as well as she was a member of several clubs. Marilyn and Neil also bonded with many foster children that they cared for throughout the years.
Besides her husband, parents, and parents-in-law, Marilyn was preceded in death by her sisters: Dorothy Jean Mattson; and Gloria Ekberg; one brother, Roger Mattson; one nephew, Don Ekberg Jr.; son-in-law, Daniel Johnson; brothers-in-law: Terry Christensen; Donald Young and his wife, Dorothy; and one sister-in-law, Joann tenBensel and her husband, Richard.
She leaves to celebrate her life; her three children: Cindy Johnson of Salina, Kansas; Nancy Hoeck and her husband, Roger of Holdrege; and Randy Young and his wife, Jeanette of Holdrege; eight grandchildren: Christine Johnson; Chad Johnson and his wife, Amber; Cathy Hill; Jamie Carlson and her husband, Kevin; Tim Hoeck; Amanda Gonzalez-Miranda and her husband, Cristian; Anthony Young and his wife, Erica; and Julia Peterson and her husband, Preston; seven great-grandchildren: Marshall and Kamdyn Johnson; Mason and Keelie Hill; Cooper, Colby, and Canon Carlson; Lela Young; sister, Audrey Christensen; sister-in-law, Virginia Mattson; brother-in-law, Don Ekberg; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 23, 2022, from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege.
A memorial has been established in Marilyn's honor, and kindly suggested to the family for later designation.
