Marion V. Walkington

A Memorial Service for Marion V. Walkington will be held on Friday, October 29, 2021, at 3:30 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege, Nebraska with Pastor Dave Irwin officiating. A private family inurnment will be held prior to the service at the Industry Cemetery near Atlanta, Nebraska.

Marion Vern Walkington, 83 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away, on October 26, 2021, at the Christian Homes Care Community in Holdrege.  Marion was born in Holdrege on January 22, 1938, the second of three children, born to LaVern and Maude (Haeberle) Walkington. He received his education from Holdrege Public Schools and graduated from Holdrege High School, with the class of 1955. He pursued higher education and received a Degree at the Automotive School in Denver, Colorado.

Marion was a mechanic and a service manager for most of his adult life at the Ford Garage in Holdrege. Following his retirement Marion worked for the city for two years helping with the grounds at the North Park.

On December 31, 1962, Marion was united in marriage to Rebecca Brooks in Bertrand and to this union four daughters were born: Debra, Theresa, Pamela, Brenda. The couple made their home in Holdrege. This marriage later ended in divorce.

Later Marion married Joyce Roberts on August 27, 1976 in Alma, Nebraska. Marion accepted Joyce's son Lee as his own. Joyce agreeingly went along and participated in the activities Marion enjoyed, she was always a good sport.

Marion enjoyed, fishing, camping, Husker football, outlaw racing, gardening, and bowling league. He raced stock cars all over Kansas and central Nebraska on dirt track in the 1960's. Marion shared his love for hunting with everyone, especially his family, and the friends he would meet from out of state. You could often see Marion cruising the town of Holdrege with his dog by his side.

He was a member of the Gun Club in Holdrege and is a past President of the Eagles where he started disco night.

Marion was preceded in death by: his parents; Vern and Maude Walkington; two sisters: Helen Demos and her husband Dick; and Norma Lee Walkington at birth; brother-in-law, Loren Roberts; sister-in-law, Myrna Twombly; mother and father-in-law: Glen and Arlis Conant.

Marion is survived by his wife, Joyce of Holdrege; five children: Debra Irwin and her husband, Dave of Kearney, Nebraska; Theresa Troutman and her husband, Mitch of Danbury, Nebraska; Pamela Russell and her husband Aaron of Kearney, Nebraska; and Brenda Thompson of Tucson, Arizona; Lee Jensen and his husband, Mike Geihsler of Gresham, Oregon; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Bob Roberts of Portland, Oregon; along with other relatives and friends.

There will be no visitation or memorial book signing, the family is honoring Marion's wish for cremation.

A memorial has been established in Marion's honor, and kindly suggested to the family for later designation.
