A funeral service for Marlene Coe will be held on Saturday, August 19, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at the Peace Lutheran Church in Alma, Nebraska with Pastor Tim Osborn officiating. An interment will follow at the Alma Cemetery, Alma, Nebraska.
Marlene Sue Higby-Coe, 74 years of age, died on Saturday, August 5, 2023, at her home in Alma surrounded by her family, following a battle with cancer. Marlene was born on July 18, 1949, in Phillipsburg, Kansas, the youngest of three children born to Velvin Arvine and Alice Pauline (Dietz) Higby.
She was baptized and confirmed at the Peace Lutheran Church in Alma, and as a toddler won the title of, "Little Miss Alma". Marlene and her sister, Donna Jean enjoyed baking together as young girls and singing their mother's favorite songs, including, "Mockingbird Hill", and "The Blue Skirt Waltz". Marlene loved animals and pets, especially dogs, cats, birds, and even frogs, even though she was allergic to cats. She was blessed with a large extended family, including many cousins on the Dietz and Higby sides, and enjoyed the yearly family vacations to the Colorado Rocky Mountains.
She received her education from Alma Public Schools and attended Alma High School, graduating with the class of 1967. She took four years of French and pursued higher education from Kearney State College attaining a Bachelor's Degree in French and English.
On December 28, 1969, Marlene was united in marriage to David Coe at Peace Lutheran Church in Alma. The couple made their home in Colorado. This union was blessed with two daughters: Laci and Jaci. The family enjoyed living in the mountains.
Marlene worked as a French Teacher at Union College and simultaneously at College View Printers in Lincoln as a proofreader typesetter. After moving to California, she worked for over 35 years, as a Payroll Accountant for the Adventist Media Center. She also served as an officer in the American Payroll Association of Ventura County.
She was a fan of all sports. She enjoyed watching the Tour de France, cheering on the Denver Broncos at tailgate parties, and watching world champion boxing. Marlene was also known for her great sense of humor.
She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Camarillo, CA and was an active member with the bell choir. She served as the church treasurer. After retirement, she was a member of the Red Hat Society in Alma.
Marlene is survived by her husband, David Coe of Alma; two daughters: Laci J.M. Coe of Riverside, California; and Jaci A.D. Coe-Jones and her husband, Dave Naegeli of Thousand Oaks, California; one granddaughter, Celina A.L. Coe-Hall and her husband of Kearney, Nebraska; one great-granddaughter, Alice S.H.Hall of Kearney; sister, Donna Jean Fischer and husband, David of Yankton, South Dakota; brother, Vel Higby andwife, Dixie of Washington State; sisters-in-law: Pam Coe of Kearney and Kristi Heft of Alma; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Friday, August 18 2023, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Bauer-Torrey & Mach Funeral Home in Alma, with the family greeting friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Memorials in Marlene's honor can be directed to the family for future designation.
