Funeral Services for Marlene J. Hansen will be conducted from the Bethel Lutheran Church at Holdrege, Nebraska on Tuesday, January 16, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend David Sites and Darrel Wissmann, PMA officiating. Interment will be in the Prairie Home Cemetery at Holdrege.
Marlene Joyce Hansen, 74 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Friday, January 12, 2007 at the Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege following a long and courageous battle with cancer. Marlene was born August 29, 1932 at Holdrege, the second of three children of Vincent and Frances (Harder) Youngquist. She was baptized on September 3, 1932 by Pastor Arthur Christensen and later confirmed on May 11, 1947 by Pastor E.K. Nelson. She was raised on a farm twelve miles north of Holdrege. Marlene received her primary education at the Rose Hill School District #68 twelve and ½ miles north of Holdrege through the eighth grade and then graduated from Holdrege High School with the class of 1949 as Salutatorian of her class. She then pursued higher education at the Kearney State Teacher's College to receive her teaching certificate. Following her education, she taught at the Snowball School District #66, the Ash Grove School District #9 and then the R-7 School all in Phelps County.
On June 14, 1958 she was united in marriage to Carroll Hansen and to this union one son, Kent was born. The family made their home on the farm south of Holdrege most of their married life. Marlene continued teaching at the R-7 School. She later became the Librarian while continuing to substitute at R-7 with over fifty years of total service.
Marlene was a lifelong member of the Bethel Lutheran Church, where she served in many capacities including: member of the Luther League, Young Women's Missionary, sang with the Bethel Choir, was part of the Women's Quartet, taught Sunday School and Bible School, served on the Church Council, was a member of the L.L.L. fellowship group and also served on the Women's Circle, serving many meals for the church. Marlene's highlight of her life was music, playing piano and organ and also enjoyed composing and writing music. Marlene and Carroll enjoyed playing piano and organ duets together at church. She was chosen as the Phelps County Centennial Queen, she loved life on the farm, especially driving truck at harvest and serving meals to the field, traveling, sewing and cooking. Marlene enjoyed the friendship bonds formed in Birthday Club, Country Coffee Club and Card Clubs and most of all loved spending time taking care of her grandchildren and attending their school events.
She leaves to mourn her passing her husband, Carroll of Holdrege; son, Kent Hansen and his wife, Linda of Holdrege; two grandsons: Blake and Lucas; sister, Margery Abrahamson and her husband, Roger of Funk, Nebraska; brother, Rodney Youngquist and his wife, Donna of Lincoln, Nebraska; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and a niece, Joyce Abrahamson.
Mrs. Hansen will lie in state at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege on Monday, January 15, 2007 from 1:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
