Joyce "Marline" Gugel, 88 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Friday, January 2, 2026, in Lincoln, Nebraska. Marline was born in Holdrege on August 5, 1937, the youngest of four children, born to Carl and Metta (Schmidt) Soneson. She received her education from Wilcox Public Schools and graduated with the class of 1955.
Following her education, Marline worked as a bookkeeper for the Holdrege CO-OP Association for eight years, where she met her husband. She then worked for the local sale barn for several years, and finally joined her husband, working side by side on the farm.
On September 23, 1961, Marline was united in marriage to Karl Gugel at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Holdrege, and to this union one child was born: Steven. The couple made their home on a farm near Holdrege before purchasing a farm south of Funk in 1972.
Besides being actively involved in farming with Karl, she also enjoyed many years as a member of the Farmerette hobby club. She was also a member of Bethel Lutheran Church and was a member of LCW at Bethel.
The couple retired from farming and moved into Holdrege in 1993. After retiring, they became snowbirds and spent 20 winters in the Rio Grande Valley in southern Texas, where they made several new friends and enjoyed playing shuffleboard, quilting, and making trips across the border into Mexico.
Marline was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Karl; two brothers: Carl Soneson Jr.; and Gordon Soneson; sister, Ardyce Murdoch; two sisters-in-law: Peggy Soneson; and Lucille Soneson; and one brother-in-law, Paul Murdoch.
Marline is survived by: her son, Steven Gugel of Lincoln; one sister-in-law, Ann Heckenlively; and a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives, and friends.
The family would like to thank the staff of Holdrege Memorial Homes, Hillcrest Firethorn Long Term Care, in Lincoln, and Hillcrest Hospice for the care they provided to Marline.
