Memorial Services for Marvin C. Westcott will be conducted from Bethel Lutheran Church in Holdrege, Nebraska on Thursday, August 27, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend David Sites and Darrel Wissmann, PMA, officiating. Private Family Interment will be at Prairie Home Cemetery at Holdrege prior to the memorial services.

Marvin Clay Westcott, 71 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Monday, August 24, 2009 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Nebraska. He was born on December 21, 1937 in Lincoln, the youngest of three children born to Clay M. and Vida G. (Warboys) Westcott. In 1942, he moved with his parents to Holdrege. He attended school in Holdrege, graduating from Holdrege High School with the class of 1956. He then pursued higher education at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, where he received his Bachelors of Science degree in Agronomy and Chemistry. Following his education, Marvin was an Officer (LTJG) in the United States Navy, serving in Morocco, North Africa and in the Washington D.C. area. Upon completion of his military service and honorable discharge on August 29, 1962, Marvin was then employed by Cargill Inc. until 1965 at which time he purchased an interest in Holdrege Seed & Farm Supply Company.

On June 25, 1966 he was united in marriage to Vicki L. Erickson and to this union three children were born: Shawna Lynn, Elizabeth Ann and Shane Clay. The family made their home in Holdrege. After selling Holdrege Seed & Farm Supply Company, Marvin then transitioned into full-time ranching.

Marvin demonstrated an intense interest in the sport of hunting and had a great respect for Wildlife Conservation and Preservation. He always looked forward to the times spent hunting with his son, Shane. He was a member of Pheasants Forever, Ducks Unlimited, Safari Club International (SCI), the Foundation for North American Wild Sheep (FNAWS), and the Nebraska Chapter of Safari Club. He was a founding member and past president of SCI Nebraska Chapter.

Other activities included serving on the Presidents Advisory Council at the University of Nebraska under D.V. Varner and Dr. Ronald Roskins, he was also a past member of the Board of Directors of The Fertilizer Institute in Washington D.C., member of the National Fertilizer Solutions Association, past President and Director of the Nebraska Fertilizer Association, and past President of the Holdrege Industrial and Development Corporation. Most recently served as a Commissioner for the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, and was a member of the Holdrege Rotary Club and the Masonic Lodge.

One of the highlights of his life was restoring the Holdrege Train Depot and collecting railroad artifacts.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Marvin is survived by his wife, Vicki of Holdrege; two daughters: Shawna Forsberg and her husband, Grant of Omaha, Nebraska and Elizabeth Dressler and her husband, Bradley of Denver, Colorado; one son, Shane Westcott and his wife, Lacie of Holdrege; five grandchildren: Seth, London, Devon, Cooper and Addison; two sisters: Artie Hobbs and her husband, Bob of Kearney, and Norma Smith and her husband, Don of Tallahassee, Florida and a host of other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 26, 2009 from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege with the family greeting from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

A memorial has been established in his memory and will be designated at a later date.
